I am struggling with subjects options A level

Hi there! I am thinking which subject it will be more helpful. I want to study Medicine.

This September 25' I am going to start Sixth Form, I will choose Chemistry, Biology, and the third option could be Physics or Maths.
I am currently studying the content of Chem and Biology A level, lol.

Which one do you recommend? Anyone who was done A-level?? Or currently on it?
Please tell me!!

Are you likely to get a better grade in Physics or Maths? Then that's the one you should choose.

For medicine, chemistry and biology are the best combo. If you do those two, your 3rd a level can be anything (even history, textiles or French etc) and your application will still be just as strong to virtually all med schools (not oxbridge though - usually they seem to want/need 4 a levels and at least 3 science ones) If you have a specific med school you want to aim for then check on their entry criteria page of their website. Though remember that most successful med applicants apply strategically so it’s best to not overly focus on any med schools until you know your ucat score, a level predictions and GCSE grades.

So I seriously urge you to make your 3rd a level one you love and will get a high grade in. All 3 a levels will need to be high grades! Pick whichever subject you like best and will do best in.

It is better to study Maths as it is more useful.

Maths is probably more relevant and useful down the line for a job, however you should go for the subject you think you'll get a better grade in, because that's what will get you into a medicine course.

Which do you find easier to revise for?
Which do you prefer?
Are you considering Cambridge uni?

I do both. Both are tricky, but maths is a lot easier than physics in my experience. There's less content and it's 99% about consistent practice. The first year of maths A level is mainly further maths GCSE, so if you've done that, it should be quite manageable.

I do edexcel maths and AQA physics, for context, and the edexcel maths Qs are very repetitive and formulaic, whereas the physics papers are absolutely diabolical in terms of difficulty. The grade boundaries do accommodate for this; in 2024, you needed 68.8% for an A* in physics. Maths, on the other hand, you needed 84%. This is because the maths papers are significantly easier.

However, everyone is different. It also depends on the exam board. Which subject do you enjoy more?

Thank you for your reply!! I am going to choose Chemistry, Biology, and finally maths. I also LOVE physics, but I think it will be better doing maths than physics. I need to achieve A*A*A*

I take maths and I would highly recommend it!! I only know one person that takes physics without maths and they find it really hard - if I were you, I would take maths, but take whatever you’d like. Good luck!!

Cambridge!!

No they don't

A level: A*A*A https://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/medicine-mb-bchir

Why Cambridge when all Medicine degrees are equivalent? It makes absolutely no difference where you train and many students dislike the Oxbridge 'hands off' approach.
