Integrated Masters, postgrad or undergrad?

Hi all, I'm an intl student planning to go to Bristol for G160 MEng in Engineering Mathematics

Is it considered a postgrad or undergrad? Am I allowed to apply for undergraduate housing/scholarships perhaps for the first years of "bachelors"? Or is it considered postgrad throughout?

Thanks so much

Hello,

To explain it briefly: MEng is an integrated master's course, which is considered to be undergraduate for the entire duration. That means it is a 4-year undergraduate degree, and is usually considered as such at most universities. However, just in case, it is best to clarify that with the admissions team or the department at Bristol University.

BEng is a 3-year (usually) bachelor's degree, while MSc is a master's (postgraduate) that you do after graduating from an undergraduate degree.

For example, I am currently a 3rd year on a MSci Computer Science degree (with Industrial Experience) at Lancaster. That means that I don't graduate after completing this academic year, unlike my peers who are studying BSc. I will carry onto my 4th year automatically, still being considered an undergraduate student. It is not only useful in terms of the fees and the paperwork, but also our Integrated Masters CS course has awesome opportunities to work on a project with real industry employers and companies that are relevant to your interests 😀.

However, if I wanted, I could switch to a BSc degree, graduate this year, and apply to a Master's (MSc or MEng) separately.

Some degrees are only available as BEng (3 years) and some are only as MEng (4 years). Both are undergraduate. If both are available for your course, then usually you can switch between the two during the first, and at some universities, during your second year.

I hope this clears things up, however, please do double-check with Bristol University officials if you have any doubts!

Best wishes,
Polina,
Lancaster University Computer Science Ambassador.
