Student Finance - applying

Hi, my mother has an account for when she supported my brothers application about 6/7 years ago. I am now applying for SFE and when I logged into my mums account to support my application, I didn’t have to fill in much details. However a lot has changed since then. One thing being that my father passed away. I want to redo every possible detail they can ask about my parents however there’s no option as SFE are assuming nothing has changed since my brothers application. What do I do?

Hi there,

When you submitted your application did you tell us about your father? You should not be logging into your mums account and she should be doing it herself. Have we requested any further evidence from yourself?

Thanks, Drew

I put down my mother as divorced not widowed. I did my mums part of the application as she does not speak/read English.

Hi there,

So you should have said she was widowed as that would have been the correct choice. You will need to upload a cover letter explaining the mistake. You will also need to upload a copy of the death certificate.

Thanks, Drew

Hi, but doesn’t being widowed mean she was still married to my father at the time of his death? I haven’t yet sent off the application on my mums part - so I can still change that. Thank you for your help so far!

But would it be correct to put my mum down as widowed even if my father and mother were divorced before his passing?

Hi there,

Yes, that's fine, don't worry - the evidence we've asked for will clarify this, and we'll send you an e-mail if we have any other questions, rest assured.

Thanks, Graeme
