uni of cambridge - mphil provisional offer given but still on decision pending

hi all - been scouring the internet for some answers/reassurance. i received an offer from my department on 12th february after interviewing with two professors.

the email said, "official notification will follow, with details about the conditions, but i am delighted to say that the faculty degree committee has agreed to offer you a postgraduate place."

however, i have been on 'decision pending' on the portal for a good couple of weeks. it was 'under review' and changed to DP over a week ago. feel like i'm going crazy and wondering if anyone is/has been in the same situation?

is it possible my offer could be rescinded?

If your department has informed you that the degree committee has approved their recommendation, that means your application is at the Postgraduate Admissions Office stage, which is just an administrative step. The chance of rejection is zero unless you’ve faked anything.

I have also been given an unofficial MPhil offer. I have been in DP limbo since the end of January and I am completely stressed out that is taking this long. I do not know if something happened and they will not give me an official offer. I don’t know if I need to call or write to them. I have other acceptances from universities elsewhere that need if I plan on accepting their spots and I have a deadline with one of the in a week. What should I do? Cambridge is my top choice.

You need to chase, because if your Dept have given you an offer, it should be through degree committee, and PAO should not take Jan to mid March. Contact PAO and your Dept int he same email and ask if there is an issue, off the back of the email giving the unofficial offer (which Depts by the way, are not supposed to do!).

Do you think there might be a problem with this? Could it be that I will not get an official acceptance?

It is more likely something has gone wrong in the admin process and your application is in limbo between the dept and PAO. Just email your dept saying you received the unofficial offer on X date and have been on decision pending since X date. As it has been more than X weeks would it be possible to receive an update.

Usually it's just that your file has fallen down the back of a desk. Sometimes it's something like you don't meet the minimum academic requirements and the PAO required the department to make a written justification for making the offer.

I am giving it until Monday. I feel like I would be "poking the bear' and I am a bit nervous about reaching out.

I can imagine, what subject is this in if you don’t mind me asking?

i'm thinking that they are just behind on admin? because it can't be the case that this is happening to so many people *with* departmental offers. i've read that once you're on decision pending you've 99.9% got an offer and the pao rescinding it is very rare... i've emailed just in case - will let you know what they reply

Please follow up with what they say. Is this happening to a lot of applicants? If it is more than just me, i would feel very relieved. I also did an open application for colleges so in my mind I am thinking they are just passing my application around to all the colleges to see who wants me
