Commuting to Uni

Does anyone here commute 45 mins to an hour to university? This is about the distance I am from the uni I have applied to. Is this doable? I would be driving and worried about the travel there and back everyday.

Have you checked to make sure that you’d be able to park your car? Universities often have limited parking spaces even for staff.

Hi there,
I totally understand your concern. In my first year of university, I commuted with an hour-long train ride, and while it saved me a ton of money, it definitely had its challenges—especially with cancellations and delays on public transport. In my second year, I moved into a flat, which is more expensive but much more convenient since, for my course, I’m now on campus 4-5 days per week compared to 3-4 days in my first year.

I see you mentioned that your main concern is the distance. A 45 to 60-minute drive is definitely doable, but it really depends on how you feel about driving that distance regularly. It might get tiring, especially with early mornings or late finishes. It’s a very personal decision, and everyone has a different perspective on what works best for them!

Making a pros and cons list to weigh up both options might be a good idea. Before starting university, you could also do a test drive during peak hours to get a better idea of what your commute would be like.
Some people love the separation between home and uni, while others find commuting exhausting after a while. There’s no right or wrong—just what works best for you! 😊

Hope this helps!

Hi there,

It's definitely a do-able commute every day but there's always the considerations of having 2 hours a day that you can't now relax or work on university work. You may miss out on making accommodation friends but there are always opportunities on the course.

But you also wouldn't have to pay rent - in the end if you weigh it up and decide the positives outweigh the negatives then its definitely possible!

I would research student parking in the area though to make sure there is sufficient spots nearby at a reasonable price.

Hope this helps

Hi there, although I stayed in student accommodation in my first year at uni many of my friends commuted or drove from home. I think this is possible depending on your time table and uni schedule as some courses require you to work more independently and you may only need to come into class for 2/3 days a week. I would suggest asking around and checking your timetable before deciding. I hope this helps 🙂

Hi there,

In short - yes, it is doable and I have a lot of fellow students who commute same way as you describe
However, if you feel like driving everyday may add bring some additional unnecessary stress or discomfort, feel free to browse accommodation options. But yes, people do commute like that and it is quite common.

Take care,
Ilya
