Firm or insurance choices

Can you put a university with the same conditional offer grades as your ‘firm’ as your ‘insurance’?

My thought is that if I do not get those two universities from my insurance and firm choice, then I will look at clearing, if that is not successful, I may possibly have a gap year until I get into my chosen university.

Yes, you can do this - but obviously you need to think about it carefully.
If you dont get the grades needed for your Firm choice, is your Insurance choice any more likely to accept you?
Remember that you can have only a Firm choice, with no Insurance, if you want to.

Clearing is not a magic way of getting into Uni - its exceptionally stressful, your choices will be limited, you will have no chance to look at the Uni etc before you accept any offer, the drop-out rate from Clearing places is very high, and at most Unis you will be at the back of the queue for housing, which can either mean 'what's left' or mega-expensive - or sometimes, no housing at all. Its usually a far better / safer option to simply resit and reapply next year.
