Lancaster Vs York

Hi, i’m conflicted at the moment between two unis. Lancaster University and University Of York. I want to study Finance at Lancaster and Accounting and Finance at York. After i’m done with my degree do employers care more about rankings or if the uni is a russell group uni. These two unis are relatively close on the ranking system across most, however, lancaster usually sits above it, whilst York is a russell group uni. I mainly wanna know which one is more desired in the field of finance and if it matters to which one i got to? What do you think is the better choice?

Choose the course and place you prefer. University rankings are of little to no significance to employment. Even investment banks, which may be somewhat narrow in recruiting policies, are unlikely to care whether your rose is white or red. You aren't choosing between LSE and Bedfordshire, so no need for the Wars of the Roses.

My daughter currently has the same dilemma albeit she is doing Economics and Finance.

Whilst I cannot give any advice on this for locations, I see Lancaster offering less optional module choices than York, but they offer certain modules not available at most Russell groups.
The issue which all students faced with this particular choice of establishment is they only hear from current or former alumni and is hugely biased.
What Styffy said is not strictly true. They care very much about where you have been as it is an industry which relies on who you know. My wife knows this firsthand as she has worked at numerous investment banks/managers and VC's.
As an example of research, think of the role which you would like to do following university, search for people on linkedin in that role and look at the university attended. 3 years of studying may change the idea of what you would like to do professionally and it is worth the market research.
I would also add that you must do as much internship during summer holidays. This may give you a slight agldvantage over others whom decide not to. This will build your network.

When it comes to finance it wont make mush of a difference between the two. Read the modules at both unis and see which one appeals best. When it comes to internships, strategically you have nearby liverpool and manchester so they are commutable. my eldest did physics at Lancaster and now is at uni of Manchester. She enjoyed her time at Lancaster, and she did choose that uni over York. I think she would have had a great time at either, but accommodation was cheaper and course for her was better at physics. plus her department was very supportive of work experience. Theres a chat to the students https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/chat/ for Lancaster so you could ask about the support they got. Theres a couple under accounting and finance.

Hi @patolc
Nice to hear your considering Lancaster. I've been studying at the university for 4 years through my undergraduate degree and now my masters and i have loved my time at the university. From my experience, I would say employers care more about what you are taught and the wider skills you develop at university, and that your passionate about your subject. Therefore, i would recommend looking at the module lists on both courses and seeing which you prefer as if you enjoy studying your modules you will get a lot more out of them.
Also, in terms of careers, Lancaster has some fantastic careers support ranging from workshops covering preparing for assessment centers and linked in, 1 to 1 career guidance and lots of on campus career fairs and employer visits. Also, have you considered taking a placement year, as this will help you to gain some work experience which can help with employability after your degree.
If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask!

Hi,

I am a 3rd-year student at Lancaster (CS course, but I took an Accounting and Finance minor in my first year), and as I am now approaching the end, I will echo what other responses said: based on my experience of doing internships and applying for roles at investment banks and hedge funds, the ranking or the "Russel Group" title seems to be of little significance. In the interviews and assessment centres, there is a lot of focus on my past experience, technical abilities, and soft skills, rather than my university.

Personally, I found the careers support one of the strongest aspects of the university. Thanks to the 1-1 CV, career planning, and interview workshops I attended and the mini-internship on campus that I was able to secure through Lancaster ERS (employment and recruitment service) in the first term of my first year, I gained valuable experience before going into the whole competitive summer internship application process. The university supports you not only in the job search and applications, but also assists you with building soft skills and networking - for example, thanks to the mentorship scheme I took part in last year, I still have a mentor who is a valuable contact and has helped me with advice and getting an internship opportunity last year.

While I am fond of Lancaster, and I think that the university offers great career prospects if you put in the effort and engage in the opportunities provided by the uni and societies like Accounting society or LUIFS (Lancaster university investment and Finance Society - another fantastic experience, where I gained a lot of market awareness and technical/financial skills through hands-on projects and frequent industry guest lectures), I will not say that you should study at Lancaster. That is an individual choice.

The better choice is the one which has the course you would find most interesting and useful, and the one that has the opportunities you seek.

To also agree with the advice of talking to students: UniBuddy is great for that, and it might be useful to reach out and ask Accounting and Finance students at both universities about their experience.

Best of luck in making your decision and good luck in your academic and career journey, whichever rose you pick 😉

Hope this helped,
Polina,
Lancaster University Computer Science Ambassador.

Hi!

Have you visited either university? Visit days can be a great opportunity to get a feel for a university and chat to staff and current students. If you have any questions about the York course, I can link up with our department for you and get a response 🙂

Hi @patolc

I see some of my colleagues have answered your question so I'll keep this short. Visiting the unis will definitely help you make your decision, both are good unis. The Russell group status often isn't looked at by employers so choose the uni you can see yourself studying at for the next 3 years.

Hope that helps,

Surely resolved in 1487.

You get bonus points for saying 1487 and not 1485!

PS: I'm still a Yorkist, though. Tudors? Parvenus!

PPS: But you have to draw the line somewhere. I'm not a flippin' Jacobite.
