Sheffield accommodation: private student accommodation or Uni accommodation?

Hi all! I was wondering whether Sheffield's own accommodations (especially Endcliffe and Ranmoor) are worth the pricey tags. Compared to other types of student accommodation (E.g Student Roost and IQ Student accomm), Sheffield's accommodations are usually worth £1000-3000 more than other accommodations and I would gladly save up as much as I could without compromising any quality of living :')

To those in either accommodations, or those who are applying, what do you think?

That's strange. Uni accommodations are usually less pricey than privately operated halls, because they aren't profit oriented. Do they offer add-ons to enrich student life, similar to Oxbridge colleges?

I’m in a similar position! Ranmoore and Endcliffe are super expensive, especially since they’re so far away from campus and rooms are really dated. Saying that, I’ve heard that in terms of meeting new people that’s the best place to live as it’s full of uni of sheff first years. Other than Endcliffe, I’ve been looking at Steelworks as the rooms are really modern and a 5-10 min walk from campus.

I'm going to Sheffield in September and I've applied for accommodation through the Student Roost. The reviews are good, and they've got good policies (like pay nothing if you don't get into the uni), and they were recommended by a student at Sheffield when I went on the accommodation tour.

Hope this helps, I'm not really sure what the unis accommodation is like

There's a few good ones, Central Place and Sheffield 3 are the cheapest, Central about 2 min from campus, and Sheffield 3s about 15 min away. They're both ensuite rooms with shared facilities, or private apartments for 1-2 ppl.

There's a few other accomodations, but I didn't look as strongly into them

Hey there @Yoishi!

Great to here you're looking at studying here in Sheffield! In my first year I lived in Endcliffe, in Howden flats, and honestly it was one of the best aspects of university life for me in first year. The major benefit of staying in one of the university accommodations (Endcliffe, Ranmoor or even City) is that everyone you're living with/around are also students at the same university as you, and also are most likely in first year as well, so for example I found that when I would meet new people in lectures or at uni, we would most likely all be walking back to the same place which was really nice to get to know people! University accommodation here also offers lots of other benefits, including a Residence Life programme which hosts activities/socials throughout the year and ice-breaker tasks to help you to meet people and get to know your flatmates, as well as support when needed.

Having said this, the private accommodations available in Sheffield are good and have their benefits as well, but I found most people will live there in their later years rather than first year.

I hope this helps, ultimately with accommodation I recommend having a look at the websites you're interested in and possibly even an online tour! Please let me know if you have any other questions!
