a level combinations !

hi so I’m hoping to go into medicine at uni and I’ve already submitted my a level applications to lots of schools but I still don’t know whether I’ve made the right choice ? I’m taking Biology, Chemistry, Maths and an EPQ but I feel like I also want to take a humanity subject as a break from just the sciences. I’m stuck between RE and Photography as just somewhere where I can be more expressive and not have to just focus on text book content whilst still being able to balance myself. Advice is appreciated thanks !

I think as long as you have chemistry and biology you’ll be fine. I’d recommend the third subject being something you enjoy and isn’t as intense as maths unless you’re looking to go to a top top uni. Then maths will make you stand out a little more.

Your EPQ will give you that - you don't need another A level.

4 A levels + EPQ on top of med applications (work experience/volunteering, UCAT prep, reading, etc.) is definitely doable but not a good idea unless you have a 4th subject you really want to study. However, if you enjoy your 4th and really do want to do one, Photography sounds like it has a much lighter workload than RE (based off the experience of my friends). RE does have a lot of content to study that could eat up your time.

Also, you would most likely have the option to switch A levels within the first few weeks of starting A levels. Start with the subject you enjoy more and if you don't like it, switch and explore the other option. Also, there's no harm in starting with 4 as you can always drop it later on. Good luck for GCSEs btw!

RE would be useful for medicine in the sense that it allows you to understand other people's beliefs, and can therefore help you understand and communicate with your patients. However, it is content heavy.
