Doubts about teaching design at Bartlett

Hello, I would like to hear from someone who has completed the first year of the Bachelor of Architecture programme. How was the design process taught? Was it easy to understand? How do they aim to enhance creativity? I have many questions regarding the curriculum and cannot find information or modules that address these aspects.

Hey - I finished my undergrad in architecture at the Bartlett last year - it was great. I think they’re pretty receptive to different styles in general, and teach the basics in design like observation and architectural hand drawing in the first year. In that year the teaching is geared more towards developing a design thinking, rather than focusing on software/ technical skills, which will become more integrated in the later years. There are weekly tutorials you will have with your group tutor where they give you one on one feedback on how your project’s going, and where to take it. I imagine that’s quite like many other architecture schools.

To answer your question on if it’s easy to understand, I’d say that’s purely subjective as everyone moves at a different pace and with a different style. I think clear communication between you and your tutors is key. Always ask questions and you will be fine.

On top of the core design module there is history in architecture, design technology, ethics, environmental and structural modules throughout the three years, you can find the specifics of these on the website. Hope that helps, I’m happy to answer more questions if you have them.
