Don't know many books but I recommend you check out this article here. I think many applicants out of this list read The Smile Stealers by Richard Barnett which gives a bit about the history of Dentistry across time.

An interesting book which isn't on this list is Open Wide by Dr Bernard Lester which describes the experience being a Dentist and what it was like years ago.

You could try wider reading using dental journals to show scientific and research interest into the field. A good place to start is the BDJ Open Access as the articles there are free and in my experience, you're more likely to find something that you can easily understand.

If you want to do wider reading on the latest dental news, you could try BBC News or Dentistry.co.uk. It's useful for hot topics such as dental deserts, dental tourism, DIY Dentistry, health inequalities among the population...

Some wider reading sites for Dentistry:

The GDC website includes a lot of information on how a lot of Dentistry works, including the 9 standards set out to maintain professionalism so confidence in dental professionals isn't damaged and the whole profession isn't put into disrepute, guidance on use of social media for dental professionals, scope of practice for each member of the multidisciplinary dental team (what they can do within their skills and training to do safely and competently)

The DDU website have guides that give explanations on what to do in ethical scenarios. Click on "Guidance and Advice" and filter it by "guide".

The BDA website has their blog section which can be useful

Oral Health Foundation has good information on oral health, current campaigns to promote preventative care, how to cut down the impact of sugar on dental health. The news section is useful too.

The British Fluoridation Society sets out the benefits of water fluoridation with statistics and research

Hey, completing books aren’t that important as it overshadows other important work experiences you can do like dental clinics, programmes at dental unis for y12s, dental charities etc
Though id reccomend doing a lot of reading into general hot topic areas so your interview goes easier!

Hey I recieved offers from all my interviews and these are some of my favourite articles that I read, I focused more on the social awareness / barriers etc parts of dentistry rather than the actual science of it bcs I found those articles harder to understand. I tried reading ‘it all in your mouth’ for a super curricular but I find these books that are very sciencey (unless linked to ur epq etc) aren’t as helpful as reading articles

https://www.nature.com/articles/4800224
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41404-021-0675-x
https://www.nature.com/articles/vital518

These were the type of articles I read, I also kept up to date on the news using the bbc and there’s this tiktoker I really liked called afreen. Also liked reading from dentistry.co.uk as well the university websites!

I actually converted these articles linked above into podcasts using AI (it was a google ai thing, I think it was called notelm? not 100% sure) so that I could listen to the articles whilst travelling to college, doing chores etc.

Just browse through the BDJ open access articles and I’m sure you’ll find more interesting topics like eco-friendly dentistry etc
