Rather nervous about offers (2026 entry)

Hey all,

I'm rather nervous about my chances for Uni offers, mainly due to my GCSEs. Below are the courses I'm considering:

1) Bath, Politics & Econ, AAA (or A*AB)
2) MCR, Econ & Politics, AAA
3) Lancaster, Econ, Politics & IR (AAB)
4) Lancaster, Politics (ABB)
5) ?

I'd really like to go to Lancaster as it's pretty much the perfect place for me, so I'd be so distraught if I didn't get an offer from there ahaha.

My GCSEs were 6666665555 (6 in maths, 6 in both Lit and Lang), and my A level current attainment is A*AA (Politics, Econ & Sociology).

Am I stressing too much or do I have legitimate grounds for panic due to my substandard GCSEs? 😭

GCSEs are about 15% of your application(however, it really depends on uni). It's good when you have a great academic record but if you don't it's not the end of the world as your A levels are good! I think with 6s in the core subjects you will meet the minimum GCSE requirements so don't worry too much about it, in the end of the day there is nothing you can do about them now.

Hiya!

I’ve double checked on our website and it says that the standard entry requirement for politics and economics is a 7 in GCSE maths and 4 in English language / literature but ‘we may also be able to consider you with a GCSE grade 6 in Mathematics’ because of your A Level choices. I can’t guarantee what the outcome would be in your situation so it’s worth contacting our admissions team for confirmation. Their details are: [email protected] or 01225383019.

I can say that they will consider your application as a whole and your overall grade profile is very good, especially as your A Level predictions exceed the entry requirements, so there’s definitely hope! All of the unis you’re considering have great reputations so hopefully you’ll have a good experience wherever you end up.

Let me know if you have any questions about studying at Bath and best of luck with your exams!

When you go to any Uni Open Days, ask this question.

But - as above - GCSEs, aside from any specifically required GCSE grades (typically Maths and English), usually count for very little, and your A level grades plus Ps are the big factors in detaining if you get an offer or not.

Btw, the course at Bath is Politics with Economics (so not a 50/50 split) and you might need to check the exact titles of your other choices to see if they are literally joint subjects or a major/minor subject combo. Bath also offers Economic with Politics, so the same subjects but different emphasis.

I wouldn't worry, Lancaster accepts basically everyone

Thanks for the response!

I did see this when looking at the course, so Bath is a more 'aspirational' application, but in theory I meet the GCSE requirements since a 6 in maths + a numerical subject at A level (Econ) is considered.

That's a good suggestion thanks!

I won't be applying for Econ with politics at bath as it requires A level maths, so the Politics with Econ course would be the better fit for me

I'm doing IR and Politics in Lancaster this September.

It really depends on the Uni. Lancaster in my opinion really does not care less about your GCSES, they just want to make sure you aren't brain dead.

Out of my 5 Unis that I applied to, I didn't get into Bristol because they do not consider my specific BTEC, and I didn't get into LSE because my English Language and Maths was not high enough.

For reference, LSE wanted a 6 in my English and Maths. I have a 5 and a 4 respectively.

If you got 6s, you'll be fiiiiiiiine. Only the prestigious uni's want high grades, and 6s should be enough.

Hi!

It's great to hear you are interested in applying to Lancaster! In terms of GCSEs, your grades are unlikely to hold you back from getting an offer for those 2 courses as you meet the entry requirements. Economics, Politics and IR requires a 6 in GCSE maths and Politics has no GCSE requirements. More information can be found here for the Economics, Politics and IR course and here for the Politics course. If you would like to talk to admissions or have any other admissions questions, you can email [email protected].

I don't study either of these courses but please let me know if you have any questions about Lancaster in general! Good luck with your studies! 🙂
