Is it worth taking a language with my course?

Hey guys and girls and all else,

I’ve firmed my offer at Exeter for a business and environment with a year abroad (probably gonna try and get it switched to a year in industry) and saw that Exeter allow you to take languages with your degree.

When looking at it, my campus only offer Spanish French and Mandarin if I’m remembering correctly and I am deciding between French and Mandarin (probably French).

Does anyone have any opinions on taking a language with your degree that can help me understand what I may or may not be getting into??

Thanks <33

Hi! I’m in my final year studying International Relations (IR) and Arabic, so I can offer some insight!

One thing I’d say about studying a language is that it’s more time-intensive than people often assume. I usually spend a lot more time preparing for my Arabic classes and exams than I do for IR. This is because it takes a while to consolidate all the vocabulary and grammar, especially when dealing with grammar concepts that don’t exist in English.

However, it’s definitely worth it in my opinion! I’ve loved seeing the progress I’ve made, and being able to communicate with people in Arabic has been incredibly rewarding. Exploring the culture while studying abroad was also a highlight of my experience.

Knowing a second language can also boost your employability and give you an advantage when traveling or working abroad. Plus, since language classes can be quite expensive, I think it’s more cost-effective to study a language as part of your degree.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions!
