Ahh, that's so cool!! Are you planning on just doing Japanese or combining it with something? ^^

I was gonna pair it with politics but I literally have 0 experience with that so I bailed in the last second 😅 But honestly after seeing the modules for Japanese on its own I think I'll be happy with the different things I'll learn besides the language itself

That's fair 😅 I'm going to pair it with Linguistics since I've seen in second year you can specialise in translation which really interests me! Have you gone to an open day yet?

Linguistics is so cool!! I'm glad someone else is doing more language focused work 😄 I did go to an open day around the end of last year and I did a taster lecture for Japanese, too, so hopefully we could find more familiar people in our course for the applicant day this April (^-^)

Hi there,

Congratulations on receiving your offer to study Japanese! I’m currently studying a language at SOAS and have absolutely loved it, especially the year abroad experience.

Before the start of the academic year, we host open days, which are a fantastic opportunity to meet your future classmates and get a feel for the program. I thought you might find this blog post by one of our Japanese students about their study abroad experience in Japan helpful. Here’s the link:

https://www.soas.ac.uk/about/blogs/my-study-abroad-experience-japan.

I hope it gives you some insight and gets you excited for what’s ahead!

Best,

Marjan Karim

I applied to a private student accommodation for this year instead of SOAS halls because the options weren't really for me 😓– I chose Pavilion Court in Wembley it's really nice and not too far either

Yeah I understand that 🥲 Pavilion court looks really nice! I went for connaught hall as it's quite close to soas and also a lot smaller than the accommodation I was at last year before I left!

I applied for just Japanese but I’m thinking about seeing if I would be able to switch to combine it with World Philosophies! Linguistics sounds like such a cool combination too!! Fresh Glassyard is my first choice for accommodation! 😆

Ooh, world philosophies sounds so interesting! I'm sure if you email them they'd be able to switch it for you as that's what happened when I wanted to add on linguistics 😊 I hope you get your first choice in accommodation!
