Student finance independent student

Would I be considered an independent student, I have only lived alone for 2 years but have been paying rent to my parents and buying groceries etc for 4+ years, just holding off my student finance application until I can figure it out, is there a number I can call to help with this?

Hi,

To be considered an independent student for Student Finance England, you typically need to meet one of the following criteria:

Aged 25 or over on the first day of your academic course

Financially supporting yourself for at least 3 years before your course

Married or in a civil partnership before the course starts

Estranged from parents

Caring for a dependent

In terms of your specific situation, despite financially contributing for 4+ years, as you have only lived alone for 2 years, you might not automatically qualify as independent. You must be able to prove financial independence for 3 full years before your course starts. You may need to provide bank statements and tenancy agreements as proof.

The best next step is to contact Student Finance for clarity :

I have spoken to a student finance advisor and she has confirmed I can apply as independent if I attach 3 x P60s proving I have been supporting myself financially for the last 3 years regardless of where I lived so this is what I will be doing, thank you for your reply
