Confused About Maintenance Loan Amount – Can Anyone Help?

Hi everyone,

I'm an undergraduate student and will be starting university this September. I recently applied for both tuition and maintenance loans through Student Finance. Right now on my student finance account its stating my approved maintenance loan amount I’m eligible for – £3.9k – which is the minimum. However, this amount doesn’t come close to covering my needs.

I’m really confused because I applied for a higher maintenance loan, but they’ve only approved the minimum amount. I live with a single parent (my mum), who is unable to provide additional financial support. My accommodation alone costs £8k, so the loan is far from enough.

On my Student Finance account, it still says that not all my details have been confirmed. Does this mean the amount will change or increase? It’s also frustrating because some of my friends, who are in a better financial position than me, have been awarded the maximum loan.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Any advice would be really appreciated!

Everyone is awarded the basic loan amount first.

Once SFE has all your household income information from your mum then they’ll assess your household income and adjust your loan upwards. That takes a few weeks from the submission of your parents household income information.

i ended up calling them to make sure and they basically said what youve stated - my friend didnt have this happen to her, she just got 8k straight away?? that kind of put me off and i got worried.

She might have been quick providing the household income information. If they don’t need any extra evidence and all the information is there then it can be assessed quickly when applying as soon as applications opened.
