It's solidly middle of the road. As someone who grew up in a bigger city and then went to Exeter for uni, there are about 5 'main' clubs (Timepiece, Zinc, Fever, Cavern and Lemon Grove [The University Club]), so there's not a huge amount of choice. That said, Cavern and Timepiece are both relatively popular and have good turn outs. As for other nightlife, quite a few societies organise pub crawls and similar events so you can always take part in those.
If going somewhere with a great student night life is important to you, Exeter isn't great for it. But it is serviceable, and there's enough going on that you will be able to find something to do.

We have 3 clubs but one main one, Timepiece. Fever is really good in first year but I’ve found it a bit hit or miss this year as it’s mostly freshers so I don’t know as many people. Cavern is more of a bar meets club situation and is really fun in 2nd year when you know everyone there. TP is great in my opinion, has multiple bars, outside areas and 2 club floors. Tickets can be hard to get but you can but off of people. Having come from not doing masses of clubbing before I’ve had a great time here, tho being near the end of my second year it is starting to get a bit repetitive, so I am trying to branch out and go to more pubs and bars of which ther are loads! So it’s no Manchester but I’ve found it not as bad as the stereotype
