King’s CS contextual offer

I was fortunate enough to receive an update today on King’s Apply in the form of an offer. I got a contextual offer of AAA rather than the A*A* A on their website.

Is this a mistake? I don’t believe I qualify for any contextual offers.

Were you part of their widening participation programme, K+, by any chance? If so, that would explain the two grade reduction in their offer.

Have you gone through their Find out if you are eligible tool? You may be eligible for a contextual offer without even realising it.

I've filled out the form and it says I'm elligible. I still don't really see why though, I haven't have any "barriers" to my education. Can they just give out these offers to incentivize people choosing them as one of their firm/insurance?

Well, some of the criteria used for contextual offers are a little crude. For example, KCL ask for your postcode and then check various sources to establish features of a typical household in that area - but that doesn't mean that all households in that area are like that. So it may be, for example, that your postcode area has been identified as one with low participation in higher education. The assumption, therefore, is that students in that area face barriers to higher education - low income, poor quality schools, etc. But that clearly doesn't mean that every student in that area is so impacted.

If you're interested in establishing why you're a contextual candidate (which is much more likely that them just having decided to make you a low offer), then check to see if your postcode matches any of KCL's contextual eligibility criteria:

ACORN: the applicant lives in an area which has a higher classification (categories 4 or 5)
IMD: the applicant lives in an area which has a higher level of deprivation (deciles 1 or 2 or quintile 1)
POLAR 4: the applicant lives in an area where the proportion of young people progressing to higher education is low (quintile 1 or 2)
