Uni of liverpool (vet med experience)

Hello guys, I'm still stuck deciding between Edinburgh and Liverpool. I've seen alot of people talking about Edinburgh but not so much for Liverpool. Any current students could share their experience here? Like what do you think about the studies there? Are teaching methods useful/good? Are there any cons and any areas to improve on?

Hard to know what exactly you want me to talk about and ofc i cant really say what is a pro/con since i have no other school to compare to, but i can talk about the facts of liverpool.

The main teaching "methods" we have are:
lectures (duh), i imagine theyre standard for vet schools, they dont really stand out to me as especially bad or good, depends heavily on the individual giving the lecture too ofc

practicals, 3 main types, the most common is prosections, they have roughly 10 stations with a specimen and some questions about it, then dissections, where a teacher guides us through what we should be cutting off/through and what we should be looking for etc, and then very rarely we have ones in a non vet specific lab that have various specimens around the place and you can kinda do your own thing and work through whatever is free, in first year this is mainly histology and you do stay in one place, but in second year (what im in now) its mainly parasitology and they have a bunch set up for you to walk around and answer questions on.

seminars , vary a lot on content, its a huge mixed bag in first year with random stuff like finance and teamwork skills, but the most useful kind, and the type weve had the most in second year, are ones where you have a list of questions on a given topic to work through with the lecturer going around answering questions. vary in size from 16 to half the year. but most are the latter.

clinical skills, youre assigned a group of 4 (rarely 5) and for 2 hours a week you work at your assigned skills, like asepsis (gloving etc), assisted parturition, CPR etc. i quite like this cause it 'forces' you to make friends which is something im not normally too good at haha. you have mock tests at the end of your cycle of skills (like 3-4 times a year?) which prepares you well for part of the real exam on clin skills.

Case based learning, like 4/5ish (really not sure on this number) a year, you, your clinical skills group, and the clin skills that neighbours you (like B1 and B2 would team up), work through a set of questions on a realistic case. good practice for the INT exam at the end of the year.

in first year you get to do HACS, which is going to the vet campus and doing stuff with each of the main species, its half a day with each species so only 2 and a half days in total (iirc, been a while). but its like a little school trip so somewhat breaks up the lecture onslaught that first year is.

mightve forgotten something but these are the main types of lessons. personally i think the teaching is good, i passed first year so cant have been that bad haha. id say the main con is the tedium of the assignments especially in first year, some of the stuff they make you do feels silly, there were two separate drawing tasks that were such a slog to get through. and you have to do a portfolio with reflections on what youve done and how youve learned from it, but you need evidence so if you didnt take a picture of it, it didnt happen. I have no actually serious complaints though.

if you have any specific questions id be happy to answer, or like quotes from edinburgh students to compare with, like i said before i cant really say if its good or bad without a comparison, its the only school and i know and im content with it.

also congrats on two offers for vet school!! (assuming youre deciding on offer and not which to apply to)

yes we had a lecture on it on the 23rd october, in second year, exact date probably varies a bit between years. i think there was some other event like a week before it too. the lecture talked about all the dates and deadlines and what your options are. i didnt go but the slides they uploaded seem very thorough. Doubt id be allowed to share it though.

nah. the literature review which i am doing rn is 2500 words maximum, which we have had a whole semester to do, and its by far the longest thing we've ever had to write. The next longest thing is probably the portfolio entries (reflections on things that have happened to you and how you can improve going forward etc), which are 500 words maximum, and we do 4 over the year. I may be forgetting something but even if i am it wouldn't have been that long. Might change in third year but I doubt it. Theres a research project but you get a day off each week in first semester of third year to do it so even if its long the time to work on it is generous.
