What are some key factors to consider when choosing a career path?

I'm really struggling to decide on a career path and I feel like I'm running out of time. I have multiple interests but can't seem to narrow it down to one specific field. Has anyone else been in this situation? How did you finally make a decision, and what advice would you give to someone who's feeling as lost as I am?

It depends on what your main goal is, for some it’s money however that comes with the side of maybe not enjoying your job. Important stuff to keep in mind are enjoyment, location, money and work hours

I would echo this - it's highly subjective. Work life balance is a really important consideration- you might have more money, but less time to travel or spend with family. If you're going to work long hours, so far as possible make sure that it's something you find interesting / enjoy! You're not running out of time - I've met people in their late 30s/ early 40s only just figuring out what they want to do. You will spend most of your life working - so take your time!

What stage are you at? You almost certainly have more time to make this decision than you think. I understand that there is a very real pressure both in the last couple of years of school and at university to have things figured out when it comes to your career, but there are often very good reasons both for not rushing into making a decision if you are unsure, and not rushing into starting the career itself.

There are a lot of relevant factors that go into deciding what career is right for you, and how important those factors are depends on what is important to you. Things like money, working hours, the interest you have in the work itself, career progression, work/life balance, stress and pressure and so on are all things that you might want to take into consideration to one degree or another. The best way to gain insight into those factors is to do work experience and speak with people who do the job, but with most jobs nowadays there are extensive resources online to give you more insight into that.

There are a few broader points to mention though. First, no one career is going to have one experience and one answer to all of those questions. Earnings, to give one example, vary significantly from lawyer to lawyer. So do things like work/life balance. Second, there is no definitive one right answer for you. There are probably several careers that would work for you. Third, when you start a career, you will have so much more flexibility going forwards than you think, either to change career or make significant changes within a career. You're almost never going to be stuck on one path with no absolutely no scope for change. So do bear all of those things in mind, and hopefully that serves to take the pressure off a bit. You're making an important decision here, but it's not one that defines the rest of your life. Not even close. So it's not as important as it feels, and it's not as urgent as it feels either.

Couldn't put it better than this. Thanks for the advice Jamie - always very insightful!

Hi,

You're definitely not alone in feeling this way, choosing a career path can feel overwhelming, but you have more time than you think. The best approach is to explore your interests, strengths, and values to see where they align. If you’re torn between multiple fields, look for common skills or career options that combine them. Gaining practical experience can really help, try internships, volunteering, or virtual programs to get a feel for different industries. Speaking to professionals, attending career events, or even shadowing someone in a role you’re curious about can also give you valuable insights.

Most importantly, don’t stress about making a perfect decision right now; many careers are flexible, and people switch paths all the time. Focus on what excites you most at this stage, take opportunities to learn more, and trust that your experiences will help shape your future direction. You’ve got time, so take the pressure off and allow yourself to explore!
I think it's important to recognise the first career you begin is unlikely to be the final one - studies have shown on average most people have 3-4 different careers over their lives, and this is increasing for younger generations!

So just know that whatever you do choose - that's not necessarily going to be "the rest of your life" most likely and you can (and statistically - probably will!) change later on if you wish
