Can I get student finance to do nursing if I dropped out after 4 years study before?

I am looking to start Mental Health Nursing in September but 5 years ago I studied Conservation Biology and had to drop out after 4 years of study, due to illness. So I only have 1 year of student finance left according to my calculations. Would they give an exception as it's for Mental Health Nursing, even though it is not a second degree?

Hi there,

Can you confirm what university you would attend and the duration of the course?

Thanks, Drew

Hi there,

This course is classed as an exception course which means we will not take your previous study into consideration when assessing your entitlement. You can apply for the Tuition Fee Loan, Maintenance Loan and Supplementary Grants if applicable to you.

Thanks, Drew

Thank you for this Drew, I will apply and see what happens!

Hi Drew!
Further to this question I have just had student finance tuition fee loan and maintenance loan approved by SFE. Before I celebrate though, how can I be sure that I will continue to qualify for the tuition fee loan to cover all 3 years of the Mental Health Nursing degree course?
Thank you

Hi Rob, Mental Health Nursing is an exception course so you'd be fully funded for this if you're not already registered in that field. The entitlement letter confirms this by awarding you both funds. Thanks, Jason

That's amazing to hear! Thank you Jason! I wish I had known about this years ago and applied but at least now I'm on track!
