Can anyone help me with question please? Part a

For part a I get the acceleration as -0.5 and then f as -500n whichever way I resolve it and I’m wondering whether it’s wrong or whether I’m just supposed to ignore the minus sign as the answer just says 500n.

Force is a vector (sign denotes direction), but the question gives no indication of which is regarded as the positive direction and the usual would be to take the direction of motion as positive. As the car brakes with force F, F must be negative so if the answer states F=500, then really they should ask for the magnitude of the force, just like they describe the resistances.

Oh ok then thank you, I kept on thinking I did something wrong but couldn’t work out what it was. Thanks for the explanation!!
