Extra years of funding (After gift year)

Hi!
I have a complicated situation.

I did BN Nursing (Adult) 2019-2020 where i got a certificate of higher education, this then was all thrown in the air and i decided to switch to early childhood studies in a panic. I did this year but never got a certificate as my mental health meant I didnt pass the year. I then went back to nursing to do my 2nd year however due to mental health again i decided to withdraw.

I have now decided i am ready to start university again. I have recieved an offer today from my chosen university. They said due to the time passed since i completed my first year of nursing that I will most likely have to re-do my first year which I am fine with.

My question is, will I be able to get 2 years extra of funding? As i know I have the one gift year left but will need 2 more to complete my studies (maintenance and tuition) I believe I would be able to get evidence from my doctor to support the mental health situation.

Many thanks

Hi there,

When does your new course start? What university will you attend, what is the full name of the course and the duration of the course? Do you have 3 years of previous study?

Thanks, Drew

Hi! Thanks for the speedy response!
New course starts sept 2025. University of Portsmouth, BN Nursing (Adult) 3 years, I have completed year 1 of nursing at the university however due to there being a long time period between then and now they would like me to do year 1 again. I did 1 year of early childhood education which i didnt get a certificate for due to mental health, and then started year 2 of nursing but also didnt complete due to mental health.

would Nursing (Adult) count under the exemption?

Hi there, Adult Nursing is normally classed as an exception as long as a student is not already qualified in that field. If you hold a qualification already for that course then you'd only be eligible to apply past the qualification you already hold (Higher Education - if this was a level 5). Thanks, Jason

Hi Jason! I am not registered, I only have a level 4. So am I right in thinking I would be able to apply to do the course again as it takes you up to a level 6 bachelors?

Also I will add that I still have one gift year of funding left, would this cover the first year again? As I did it so long ago, the uni want me to redo the first year. Thank you

You can make an application and the assessors will review this accordingly for you.

If you are planning to study this in the 25/26 academic year those applications are now live for you to apply on. Thanks, Jason
