Hello seraphimstears,

I’m not entirely sure how it works from a DSA perspective however, at my university, I got a studio during first year and paid the full costs myself. Then in second year (and hopefully in my final year also), I was given priority when came to accommodation. When given this priority, instead of paying full price for a studio, I paid the price of a standard room for a studio and the university covered the rest.

I would recommend letting the university know about your disability to see what they can do.

Hope that this helps and I’ll see if I can find anything on DSA (or someone else might be able to talk about the specifics).

No worries.

There’s a webpage about DSA here well if this is helpful: https://www.gov.uk/disabled-students-allowance-dsa and the UCAS page: https://www.ucas.com/money-and-student-life/student-life/accommodation-advice/accommodation-disabled-students

Best regards,

This is absolutely correct. The uni should be providing suitable accommodation without the need for you to pay a premium. But only if it is their accommodation.

If you live in non-uni accommodation, dsa funding is possible but you will need evidence from a health professional explaining why you need the specific accommodation- then your needs assessor can make the request and they will pay the difference in cost between the standard and the specialist accommodation.
