The Student Room Group

I have just had a baby during term 2 - can my maintenance loan be adjusted?

Hi there,

Advice online is vague so thought I would ask here.
First important point is that because I was originally a January intake, my finance year runs January-September as opposed to September-April.
My course runs September-April like normal but my foundation year was January-September so my funding schedule has stayed the same.

I am in term 2 of my second year. I have just had a baby 1 month ago!
My student finance payments through to September this year are already confirmed, and I have already received the January payment, with only April and September left to receive.
This years finance is assessed on my dad’s income as living away from home (I live with my partner, we are not married and I am under 25).

My query is whether or not I can get my maintenance loan adjusted to be a higher amount as I am now technically an independent student. I have already uploaded a form applying for CCG and PLA for the 24/25 academic year to reflect a change in circumstances.
I have also just applied for my third year and I am being assessed independently. I have no taxable income so should hopefully qualify for the full amount of maintenance loan.

If this can be adjusted, how? Some advice says it can be and other advice says that student finance will not reassess independent status until the next academic year. Would it not result in an underpayment otherwise?

Thanks!

Hi there, yes - The Parent Learning Allowance grant will be awarded from the term in which the child is born i.e. if the child is born in term 1, you will be entitled to claim PLA for the full academic year. If the child is born in the 2nd term they will be eligible to receive 2/3rds of the PLA. So if you've uploaded evidence this will go to be processed accordingly. Thanks, Jason
