Advanced highers and crash highers

I was wondering, how difficult would it be to take two advanced higher’s maths and English, and crash physics and application of maths. Would this be too much of a workload? Would it be worth it overall?

Hi Rhys,

It’s great that you’re thinking ahead about your workload! Taking Advanced Highers in Maths and English alongside crashing Physics and Applications of Maths is definitely a big challenge, but whether it’s ‘too much’ really depends on why you’re choosing these subjects and what you need them for.

I crashed Physics myself and found it to be okay, but I had already studied Higher Biology, Chemistry, and Maths beforehand, which definitely helped since there’s a lot of crossover with the scientific thinking/approach to problems. If you’re comfortable with those kinds of subjects, then Physics might not be as overwhelming, but it’s still a demanding crash course with a lot of new content.

The biggest thing I’d say is: why do you want these qualifications? If you need them for a specific college/uni/career path, then it might be worth the challenge. But if you’re just taking them for the sake of it, it’s definily worth considering whether that workload is necessary, especially since Advanced Highers are already a big jump from Highers.

Also, ask yourself if you actually enjoy these subjects—taking on a heavy workload is much easier if you’re genuinely interested in what you’re studying. If you’re unsure, I’d recommend looking into the course content for each subject to get a better idea of what you’re committing to.

At the end of the day, it’s about balance. If you’re confident in your ability to manage the workload and you think you'll find the subjects enjoyable, then go for it! But if it feels like too much, there’s no harm in adjusting your choices to make things more manageable.

Hope this helps!

Of course it will be a lot of work, but it really depends what you are doing it for. What uni course asks for advanced higher English, as well as subjects like maths and physics? Is it really worth taking all of them if it will end up reducing the grade you get in all of them because you have too much to do?
