Grading

Hi all, in my final year.

Was just wondering how would rounding work when calculating the final grade. Lets say the overall final grade is 69.5%, would they round up to give me 70% (1:1), or round me down to 69% (2:1)

Thx

Hey,

This is a really common concern for final-year students, and the answer depends on your university’s grading policy. Some universities round up if your final grade is 69.5% or higher, meaning you’d get a first-class degree (1:1). Others might require your grade to be at 69.6% or even 69.75% before rounding up, and some institutions don’t round up at all, keeping you at a 2:1 (69%) unless there’s a specific discretionary policy in place.

Many universities also have discretionary uplift policies, where if you're very close to the higher classification, they consider factors like:

Strong performance in final-year modules

Consistently high grades in key subjects

Exceptional dissertation/project work

The best thing to do is check your university’s handbook or assessment regulations to see what their specific rules are. You can also reach out to your personal tutor, course leader, or academic support services for clarification.

At Salford, students can get support from their personal tutor or academic services for questions like this, so your university may have a similar service that can guide you! It’s worth asking to make sure you understand how your final classification will be determined.

You’re so close to a first, so fingers crossed that your university’s policy works in your favour! 🤞📚

Hi there,

This can completely depend o your university and even your course!
you should be able to access a version of your student handbook or ask your head of course for the link/a copy. I know universities can really vary with the rounding, the weighting of each module and some discounting different modules from different years entirely!

But a lot of universities do round up from about 69.5% on the final grade but definitely double check what your university does!

Hope this helps

There is no such thing as a 1.1. It is simply a 1.
