Email the nursing deparment at ARU and ask for a copy of this year's timetable. It will give you an idea of what to expect although it might change next year.

Hiya!

I study Childrens nursing at ARU but we do a lot of our lectures with the adult nurses.

The timetable differs each week, no two weeks are the same and they change the timetable regularly. They do advise that you are available 9-5 Monday to Friday during theory time, while I know that this is not very achievable for most individuals due to needing to work part-time, unfortunately it is what the university advise as they do change the timetable last minute sometimes. I would suggest that you discuss this with your work as they will need to be flexible.

There are some weeks where we are in 5 days a week, or we may be in for a few days and online a few days. There are also some weeks where we are only in one day a week. 50% of it is university and 50% of it is placement. In my first year we did 3 placements, which totalled 14 weeks of placement. When you go on placement, you tend to find out your shifts 2 weeks before you start the placement, therefore work will need to be flexible with your shifts and availibility.

In my first year, my first placement was in the January. I believe they intend to do this, where possible, for first years, so that you can have a whole trimester of theory before attending any placements. This is what I have been informed of but they may change their minds, or it may differ for adults nursing. Your best bet is to contact the university about this and see if they have decided on a block plan yet.

If possible, discuss going onto a zero hour contract or a low hour part time contract so that you have the flexibility to attend university and placement shifts without the worry of letting down work.

Best of luck,
Jess - Digital Student Ambassador at Anglia Ruskin University
