What Higher’s Should I take in 5th Year for LLB Law?

Hi, I am in 4th year just now and I am studying Nat 5s in English, Maths, History, Spanish, Modern Studies, Biology and Admin IT. I achieved in my prelims and predicted to get As apart from Maths, where I am sitting at a borderline C/B. I am still deciding what Highers to take in 5th Year as want to take Higher Human Biology but worried I need to take Higher Maths for LLB Law entry requirements.

I know I am definitely wanting to take Highers in English, History, Spanish and Modern Studies in 5th year then Advanced Higher’s in English and History and Higher’s in Politics and Geography (or just Politics) in 6th year.

I am hoping to study LLB Scots Law but I am worried that I need to take Higher Maths for it as a requirement. I would rather not take it as it is by far my weakest Nat 5 as I really struggle with it and need a lot of help with it. I would much rather take Higher Human Biology as I find Biology more easier and find it more interesting. I am just worried that if I don’t take Maths at Higher I will harm my chances of getting accepted into Law.

Any help please?

A quick look on the Edinburgh uni and it states:
"The grades used to meet our entry requirements must include:

SQA: Highers: English at B, at first attempt."

This means that the only subject you need is English, at least for Edinburgh. Their other requirements are AAAAA, but these can be in any subjects including English.

Looking on the Glasgow uni website, they ask for:
AAAAB is the minimum requirement from S5 to be reviewed for an S6 offer

Typically offers will be made at Higher AAAAA plus Advanced Higher B by end of S6. B at Advanced Higher is equivalent to A at Higher

Additional requirements Higher English at A plus either Advanced Higher English B or Humanities subject B

Satisfactory completion of LNAT.

Meaning you need English and a humanities based subject at advanced higher (could be English) plus preferably AAAAA. They also ask for the LNAT, although I think they are the only Scottish school who do.

So to answer your question, no you do not have to take maths and no, this will not harm your chances of getting in. Take the subjects you will get an A in first time at higher and then pick the subjects you will enjoy most for at advanced higher, Bs are all you need.

Best of luck!

I am applying to Scots law this year and not taking maths hasn't harmed my application at all, I took higher English, spanish, history, geography and business and that was all good! As long as you take English, I think you're good to choose whatever four other subjects you enjoy, as many of my friends also applying to law did take subjects like biology as you mentioned. I wouldn't worry too much. Best of luck!

Hi, I applied to Scot’s law this year at Glasgow and my advice is to take whichever subjects your best at (include English obviously) - I think admin is quite an easy one so I’d recommend that personally. I took biology which was a bad idea as I wasn’t really too good at it and struggled quite a bit, so I’d take whatever you’re best at since other than English the subjects don’t matter, just your grades. I think Spanish might also be a good one to take.

You do not need Higher maths for any scots law degree. For a lot of degrees you don't even need to pass nat 5 maths - although for UWS you would need a B at nat 5 maths.

I hope this helps and if you have any more questions feel free to ask me. 😊
