Apprenticeship or University

Hi

I dont know how this website works and this if my first time using it but im just here to ask if i should pick between an apprenticeship or university

For context, as of now in year 13 im doing history politics economics predicted A*A*A and i want to do a history degree and then law conversion and I have offers from UCL, Durham and Kings college (and im expecting an LSE decision soon), however recently there was an opportunity for me to potentially enter an apprenticeship instead where i would work for an oil broker as an assistant of sorts (I dont know the exact position but it includes stuff with managing documents/admin and teaches me about finance & markets) and it will last 3 years with me earning 25k a year and then after which I have the option of becoming an oil broker myself.

Which is better for me to choose? because with the apprenticeship i dont have to deal with the debt but i dont know if its going to seriously affect me if i dont have a degree

Don't let student debt be part of the deciding factor, whilst it is real, a good degree that you are really interested in and work for, will be a good investment whatever career you go into. I'd say find out exactly what the apprenticeship entails and what qualifications you'll come out with and weigh up with your degree choice and see what you fancy studying the most.

I agree with this - also another thing to consider; Apprenticeships are great, however if you end up hating that job and wish to switch to a different field, that apprenticeship would be less transferable and potentially less valuable than a degree.

However if you’re certain you’re happy with becoming an oil broker, then that could be a great opportunity to develop your CV whilst earning money.

I think you need to really find out what exactly the apprenticeship entails and compare that to the degree/ law pathway and see which area you’re most interested in pursuing.

Good luck! 😊

Don't worry about Finance. Worry about what you are going to do in the future. Secure a good job and then clear off the debt. With apprenticeship a lot of time is needed with no gurantee.
