Leeds art or Kingston?

I’ve been offered an unconditional place at both universities. Leeds for fashion design and Kingston switched me to fashion promotion and communication. Kingston has always been my dream but now I love the look of Leeds. I love Kingston because it’s one of the top unis and I know I will get great teaching and work placements, but it’s not the same course I applied for and I don’t know how much I would like the people. Leeds I never considered until now, and it seems great, the accommodation is amazing, they loved my work and I think I would love the people and they would be more like me. Any feedback or reviews of both schools would be really appreciated thank you

Our daughter had a great year. Facilities are excellent and right in the City Centre - good reputation for the arts too with alumni like Damian Hirst. I’d recommend it

Hi @Lar12345

Congratulations on your offer!

I am currently in my 2nd year at Kingston studying fashion promotion and communication so I am happy to answer any questions you may have about the course and uni.

From personal experience I love living and study here, it has given me so many opportunities and it is a lovely area to explore with so much going on that has really helped me to grow creatively.

Fashion comms is very different to the design course, some of the key differences being that design focuses on the making of the garments, whereas fashion comms you are not taught how to make garments but more so how to promote them through a range of things like marketing, photography, graphic design, styling, event planning and more.

In my first year the modules looked like the following:
Fashion Context: This was all about PR and marketing, analysing brands and using marketing and business strategies, creating brand reports and new communication plans.
Professional Practice: A really creative module where we would have workshops in styling, photography, graphic design, image making etc. The project we worked on was creating a zine, so journalism was definitely something you could specialise in for this project.
CHS (Critical historical studies): In this module we learnt about the different histories and concepts in the fashion industry. Analysing images and text. The assignments for this are essays.
Fashion Promotion and Communication: This was really a mix of everything, putting all we had learnt into practice to work on projects that we could really be asked to do in industry. Such as proposing collaborations and creating campaigns, making sure we could back up our proposals with strong research.

I will leave a few links to other post I have done that will give you some more information:
My Deciding Factors For Choosing Kingston University - The Student Room
How Kingston Prepares you for Industry - The Student Room
A Week in the Life as a Fashion Comms Student (Kingston University) - The Student Room

Just wondering what your concerns are about why you may not like the people? I am from in between Manchester and Liverpool and so I feel like I had a similar concern but there is such a range of students here at Kingston that I found lots of people I get along with and it is good to meet people from different backgrounds.

If you have not already I would really recommend going to an open day or offer holder day for both universities as you can get an idea of what it might be like to live and study there as well as getting a chance to speak to current lectures and students. There is more info on the Kingston website Open Days and events | Kingston University London

I hope this helps and any questions don't hesitate to ask

Leeds is a great city to study in with a thriving arts community. There’s always something different to do so you are guaranteed an excellent social life. Our campus is based next to the city centre, so you have a range of great cafes, shops, green spaces and galleries at your doorstep. The Sunday Times has recently named it as the best place to live in the north. I have enclosed a link below with some of our must-visit places :

Hey everyone!
I’ve been debating between studying fashion at Leeds Art and Kingston, and I’m curious to know what others think about these two schools. Both have great reputations, but they seem to have different vibes.

Leeds Art: Known for its strong emphasis on creative expression and innovation. It’s a great place if you're looking to experiment with new materials, sustainable fashion, or even fashion tech. The student culture there seems really hands-on, which I love!

Kingston: On the other hand, Kingston is known for its more structured approach to fashion design. If you're looking to get into fashion marketing or business, Kingston offers a good balance between creativity and the practical side of the industry. The connections they have with the fashion industry are pretty solid too.

If anyone has studied at either school or knows more about their fashion programs, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Also, if you’re looking for some fresh insights on current fashion trends, I found this website with some cool resources: 👉 https://retseaz.com/
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi,

I don't personally study Fashion Design here at Kingston but I do study Fashion Promotion and Communication and so I can give you some insight into the department and campus.

You will be based at Knights Park, which has a collaborative atmosphere there is a river running alongside the campus which creates a nice outdoor social space, as well as the student bar being based there and a great library. The facilities for fashion students are great with lots of equipment from industrial machines to a knit room with a range of knit machines. There are also other workshops that any student can access no matter what they study such as printmaking, woodwork, ceramics and more, meaning you can really experiment mixing mediums.

I will leave a few links to some posts one of the other reps have done who studies fashion design here to give you their perspective:
A Week in the Life of Kingston Fashion Student - The Student Room
Life as a Student in Kingston University’s BA Fashion Course - The Student Room
An insight into Lv6 helping at the end of the semester! - The Student Room

Here are a few posts I have done that might help give you an overview of the university:
Student Organised Events Happening at Kingston University - The Student Room
How Kingston Prepares you for Industry - The Student Room
Social Life and Night Life at Kingston - The Student Room

I hope this helps and if you have any more questions let me know
