Cambrian Patrol.

Just stuck my hand up for this.
I know there's a few other non-RAF bods lurking about, so I was wondering if anyone here had any experience of it? I know the basics, and all the stuff that can be found on google/ARRSE/MOD websites, I'm more looking for personal stories, hints & tips etc, kit recommendations etc. Is issue kit only enforced, or is private purchased kit allowed? Do you really need to employ less-than-legal methods to get anything better than an attendance certificate?

Many thanks, answers on a postcard to the usual address.

RAF bods take part. RAF bods sometimes help run it. Cold, crappy, nasty place. Mil skills for the whole team need to be up to scratch as it is most certainly a team effort. Individuals in teams can be dangerous when they try to push it too far / hard and break / neglect team members.

Really? Fair one, wasn't aware of that - thought it was purely a green effort. Thanks for that. The floor is open to my light blue brethren then

I did it when i was in the TA back in 2005. Walked away with a Bronze and we did everything pretty much by the book (except for not properly patrolling between stands!). You can take non-issue kit, especially warm kit!.

Our team manager gave us plenty of rope and pretty much let us teach ourselves the stuff that we needed to know with some guidance from him. Apart from drill nights, we only did one training weekend. I think the most important thing is to have a section that are super keen and have a decent level of fitness. We all got on really well so made it quite enjoyable...despite horrendous weather!

In physical preparation i went out and did a couple of tabs with kit just to get my body use to carrying a bit of weight. I also used some decent boots and did not suffer from blisters at all.

At least your unit is starting prep in good time rather than the "who's not busy this weekend?" it was a few years ago at a previous unit of mine

Watch this space

Colour man: 'Right, who fancies going on Cambrian?'
Out of a Coy of nearly 40, FiveFiveSix is the only one to stick his mitt up.
'Ok, who apart from FiveFiveSix actually knows what Cambrian is?'
*nichts*
After some explanation, a few more hands went up...

I have the feeling that was prep, however. Next question - how would one go about training for it? Head down, arse up, tab - or something more structured?

Definitely structured, last thing you want is an injury. Bearing in mind you'll need to be hot on your MATTs too, no point in smashing out a record time but scoring zilch points on the stands. For now I'd just sit tight until something comes up on orders or you could try and find out who the patrol commander will be and speak to him. You might find yourself putting in a fair few extra hours in the build up but if you're keen and focussed I'm sure you won't mind

I wouldn't mind putting myself forward for it but I won't be available around the time of the competition :frown:

PS I haven't done the patrol, but know a fair few people that have and have trained with them. Good luck though bud.

Got a MATTs w/e coming up, so that will give me an idea of where I need to improve, if anywhere - thanks for that... I've got all the MATTs on PDF too, so I'll give them a good bashing. (If anyone wants copies, PM me - I've also got patrol/section order templates etc)

You're right, it is (probably - no dates yet!) early days yet, but going on past experiences I thought I'd find out as much as poss, hopefully we'll get some specific training/prep time, but I doubt it somehow... As to putting extra hours in, not a problem at all.

Appreciate all the advice chum, it's all very useful. A bloke I know said Cambrian is the closest you'll get to selection, and while I find that a bit hard to believe ('specially since they let the Crabs take part :p:), I have heard it's not a walk in the park.

Anything else anyone wants to add will be gratefully appreciated. If it actually does happen, and I do manage to get on it, I'll keep this updated if anyone is interested!

Dates wise I believe it is around October/November time.

Suggest you ask about this on ARRSE - even weekend warriors have their own forum over there.

In fact i would echo ProStacker and suggest you search ARRSE as Cambrian has popped up more than once over there.

Back in 2005 it did feel like selection might as we ended up just doing a point to point tab with a limited number of stands. In fact one of which we were expecting a river crossing as we walked round part of the Usk Resevoir...so the morale of the team hit rock bottom (despite being wet through) but then, once the section commander had got his briefing, we found out that it was to be a boat crossing - how relieved were we!?!!?

I would love to do Cambrian Patrol! Seems so challenging

I was tempted to do it a few years ago but we couldn't get a team together. It's quite big with the Crabs; I know my old base used to put a few teams forward. Deffo try Arrse x

Aye, if you'll notice in my first post, ARRSE was my first port of call. I'm a fairly active member on there, so I'm well aware of the threads on it, as well as the TA forum, but thanks anyway.

I will ask about it some time in the future, but I'm not anxious to out myself quite yet, being fairly active there y'see.

As I said in my first post, I'm more looking for personal stories/experiences rather than stuff I can glean for myself from Arrse/google/MOD websites.

There's nuttin' like repeating yourself

I was part of the Australian army team that won the British Army's Cambrian Patrol in 1986.

In 1986 1 RAR (first Royal Australian Regiment) won the prestigious Duke of Gloucester Cup competed between the Australian defense force, Later that year my team went to England to compete in, and subsequently win, the British Army's Cambrian Patrol contest.

Exercise Cambrian Patrol is an annual patrolling competition that takes place throughout the Cambrian Mountains of mid-Wales. An internationally recognized military exercise.

All I remember it was "bloody" cold and bleak place I enjoyed the shooting.
I am not sure if I could help you guys but open to any questions or willing to give any pointers and help I can. Ken

LV, There's the Cambrian Patrol, which is aimed at (as the name suggests) patrolling skills, orders process, recce, patrol reports, yada, yada, yada, (which is screamingly tough!) then there's the Cambrian Competition, which is a hill walking, kayaking, orienteering competition - equally challenging, but less emphasis on 'soldiering'. RAF teams enter both - make sure that you've got your name down for the right one!

I was asked if I was interested in something like this just before christmas. I thought it was the Cambrian patrol, but they seemed to think it was in July - anyone know of a similiar thing about then which it could be? Don't know when I will see the guy starting it up again. This is the first time I believe our unit (TA) has done it, so it may turn into a cluster f*ck, but I got the feeling they have written off this year already and just want us to have a presence to prepare for next year.
Anyway, Cambrian patrol or not I will hopefully be doing it, though I am a little worried about my shooting skills as I havn't done range firing for a while and no idea when I will be again.

Cambrian doesn't alwas involve live firing. When i did it in 2005 we only did a blank section attack on a couple of pre-fab buildings. Although i have heard of live ranges being a part of it before.
