LMA Liverpool Acting

I'm absolutely panicking! I've applied for acting at LMA, have paid the deposit on my accom and have everything set to start in September. The online reviews I saw at first were mixed, which I assumed was to be expected of any uni but upon looking further they seem extremely negative. I want to be a professional actor and I'm now extremely worried that this is going to be a complete waste of money and time. I was rejected from LIPA (waiting list :/), but have a form to fill out for Trinity Dublin too. I had always thought a degree was a degree, the vibe at the open day was great but I'm majorly doubting myself now. What do I do????

If you want to go into something like teaching, or management or some other profession where the degree subject studied doesn't matter then yes, a degree is a degree. For anything vocational such as acting or where you need good industry links then it matters VERY much where you study.

Acting is one of the hardest, most precarious professions andto give yourself the best chance you need to go to a highly respected, Spotlight accredited school usually a member of FDS or CDMT.

I've definitely always considered acting, particularly voice acting or maybe even content creation, to be my thing. I just feel so anxious about this now as it feels like I'm falling at the last hurdle, y'know? In terms of alternate routes, is it best to stick with my decision and go for a masters at the Lir or another conservatoire, or just defer a year and try LIPA again next year? I have an offer from Queens Belfast for English and Linguistics, is it best to do that then do a postgrad in Acting? Sorry for the rant !!

If you have a LIPA wait list, it may turn into an offer...

this is what I'm thinking, although it's hard to know

I called them yesterday to ask whereabouts on the list I was, all they could tell me was that after a place becomes available they reassess all the applicants on the list.

despite this I can't help but feel it's a real lottery, (hopefully one that's winnable) but if I have accom in Liverpool already, realistically it can only be a bus and a bit away so I don't think I'll be very annoyed to let go of LMA if it comes to it

My gut feeling is that if you are good enough to get into LIPA (waiting list indicates that you are good enough they are just very oversubscribed) that you would be better off taking a gap year and applying again to a range of other institutions.

yeah that could be real tbh, i'd just worry about my mentality if I took a gap year tbh. I live in the North of Ireland so I'll prob have some opportunities floating around me that I can take up through the year. Thanks for your help!

Hi just as welconetotherock said if your good enough to get on the waitlist for lipa and your looking for professional acting I would not use 3 years on LMA.

Have you thought about applying to the schools that are still open like Arts Ed think you have a few days left, and Oxford school of drama. I think you would regret it and might find it really hard after graduation with LMA and you can’t get another degree funded once completed. You could always do an MA but my friend did an MA at Central and struggled to get signed after. She ended up doing a course at RADA to get more experience so it’s still risky.
If your worried about taking a gap year due to mentality maybe apply to some foundations too at least then your keeping busy on what you want to do. One of my friends might be applying cert he at Drama Studio London depending on her final recall so she can keep busy for the year. They’re still open for applications and It comes with accommodation it’s funded and an accredited school.

Hi! sorry I haven't checked this in a number of days, but I'm taking a gap year! I'm gonna apply to the lyric belfast for their drama studio course, and look for student films and stuff through the year to get some credits. Honestly so glad now I cancelled my accom and won't be going to LMA as I don't feel its worth getting into debt over. Thanks so much for your advice too, I'll defo have a look into it !
