De Montfort University is a Heart Safe Campus. But what is a Heart Safe Campus?

Hiya!

After recently completing my internship, thanks to the Careers Team and the Engagement and Development Team at DMU, I thought I’d share what I’ve been up to over the past 6 months as the Heart Safe Campus Co-ordinator.

At DMU, we believe in not only supporting the academic and personal growth of our students and staff but also in creating an environment where safety and well-being are paramount. That’s why the DMU Engagement and Development Team is proud to continue leading the Heart Safe Campus Project, in partnership with the Adam Redfern Memorial Fund / @redfern_fund on Instagram

Our shared goal is simple yet vital: to make DMU “the safest possible space for anyone to suffer from a cardiac arrest or heart attack, outside of a medical setting.”

The Heart Safe Campus Project officially launched on Re-start a Heart Day, 16th October 2024, marked by a CPR RevivR event with the British Heart Foundation held at DMU.

Cardiac arrests can happen anytime, anywhere — and every second counts. Immediate action, particularly early CPR and defibrillation, significantly increases a person’s chance of survival. Through this project, we aim to ensure that everyone at DMU is not only aware of this but also feels empowered and equipped to act

Our vision for a Heart Safe Campus revolves around training as many people as possible to understand CPR techniques and how to use the defibrillators that are strategically located around our campus. If you would like to know where your nearest defibrillators are use this helpful link ❤️

This project is especially meaningful as it is conducted in partnership with the Adam Redfern Memorial Fund, honouring the memory of Adam Redfern, a much beloved DMU alumnus and staff member who tragically passed away in 2021 from a cardiac arrest. His legacy continues through this campaign, scholarships, and group grant schemes, ensuring that others are given the best possible chance of survival through increased awareness, training, and preparedness.

Get Involved !

We are just getting started, we’ll be rolling out more training opportunities, raising even more awareness, and offering plenty of fundraising events such as our annual Run for Redfern (5k charity fun run), Football Tournament, and Heart Safe Quiz.

Together, we can create a culture of care, preparedness, and life-saving action at DMU. We have just uploaded an official video about our Heart Safe Campus Project ❤️

Working on this project has been an incredible experience. As a student, it’s comforting to know that our safety is a priority. I would much rather be somewhere where someone knows what to do, rather than standing around, hoping someone else will step in
