Eng lang A level or Lit?

Hi,
I’m interested in doing A level English. Is one seen as a better A level than the other? In terms of university.

To be honest either is fine, english language may be a bit better as it studies the theory of lingustics and kind of goes into the psychology and social contexts of language

English lit I would say is more well respected generally, but as someone who did A level English lang and went on to do psychology at Durham and get a 1st, I can’t recommend lang enough. I thoroughly enjoyed the content and felt it was the perfect complementary subject for psych. It’s very different to GCSE, but I found it so much more interesting and engaging than I thought and still use the knowledge to this day. And you can easily talk about it in your personal statement. Best of luck!

Hi! I'm currently in year 12, and I started the year with LangLit . Although it was interesting, it started getting repetitive for me as we had an anthology with many non-fiction extracts (an example was an interview with Barack Obama and Jay Leno) which we had to analyse. I was only in the class for about two months, but it wasn't very fulfilling for me, so I switched to Lit and I couldn't be happier. I have a few friends in LangLit and the main difference between the classes is that in Lit there's a lot more class discussion and you're encouraged/expected to have your own interpretations of the texts you're studying, which I quite enjoy and felt was missing from LangLit. Of course, this might just be a case of different teaching styles and might be different in your school. I'd recommend looking at the course structure and finding out which one you're more likely to enjoy, as they are pretty similar. In regards to universities, it doesn't really matter which one you pick as the courses that I've looked at that do want English accept both options. Pick the one you think you'd enjoy most as it will likely be the one you'll find easier to revise and, therefore, get a better grade in. Best of luck!

If you're interested in psychology and are aiming for Russell Group universities, the OIB Baccalaureate seems like an excellent option. It highlights your English language proficiency, which is a major advantage when applying to psychology programs at English-speaking universities.

Hi there!

I faced the same predicament - I did Biology, Chemistry and was deciding between English Language and English Literature. I chose English literature because I enjoyed the texts i would be studying however English Language can compliment Psychology really well if this is what you want to do at university - and can help with your personal statement.

I hope this helps!

Kind regards, Jenifer (Kingston rep)
