Should I Study at UAL or Stay in Malaysia? Need Advice!

Hi everyone,

I'm a Malaysian student trying to decide between studying Fashion Buying and Merchandising at LCF or pursuing locally. I'm worried about future job prospects and heard that the salary can’t cover for the living costs.

Has anyone from Malaysia studied at UAL? What was your experience like and what are the job opportunities like after graduating in this field? Would it be better to stay in Malaysia instead?

Any advice or personal experiences would be super helpful!

Thanks in advance!

Hi! I'm not from Malaysia but I am a Korean National living in the States thinking about going to UAL. I may not be much of help, but hopefully I can give you some ideas?

First, are you applying to a pre-degree program or directly into their undergrad program- Or maybe you already got your acceptance to LCF?
Depending on which, you can stay for longer than your program. I think... 5 years? and your course is probably only 3 years so you can stay and work a little bit more to help cover the tuition.

Also, I hate to be pessimistic, but I feel like especially for the fashion industry it's good to get out on the market where there's more of sellers, buyers, and big corporations that are heavily ingrained in the industry. LCF is definitely one of the best fashion schools there is in the entire world, and the quality of education and prep in to the fashion industry would be worth it.

Just like any other fashion or art schools, they are VERY expensive just like their location, like Parsons in NYC, and Otis in LA. While the living cost is really high in London, the tuition in comparison isn't as high as other art schools in western countries, so If you are set on pursuing fashion or anything related for a long time, I think it will be a great investment.

For job prospects, I can't really say because I am not commited to UAL either- and haven't been to the UK. But there are many big fashion houses in London, and other business in general- London is a big city and there's got to be a place you can work at. It may not be enough to pay the bills at first, but I think continuously balancing work with your studies can help you a lot especially through like 5 years. After your course ends, you can get like an internship at a company that you really like and that will both support you monetarily and get you in the industry.

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts!

I’m applying for the undergrad. Just got my offers for Fashion Management and Fashion Buying & Merchandising, so I’m trying to figure out which one makes more sense. It’s a 4-year course with a placement year included.

My main concern is the job prospects after graduating, both in the UK and back in Malaysia. I’ve heard it’s pretty tough for international students to get a job and stay in the UK, so part of me is wondering if it might be better to stay and study in Malaysia instead.

But yeah, I totally get what you mean about London being a huge fashion hub and how the connections from LCF could be super valuable in the long run.

Really appreciate your reply! It means a lot!
