Extractor Fan driving me crazy

Our extractor fan is on 24/7. There's no switch to turn it off or time out. So all through the night and in the day all you can hear is just this loud buzzing sound that rattles in your head and leaves you with tinnitus and a headache. I genuinely can't fall sleep without noise cancelling headphones on and that's been giving me really bad acne on the side of my face. (can't wear the ones that go inside your ears due to really small ears making it uncomfortable and a sensory nightmare)
I don't know what to do about it, we called to reception and all they said was we can't turn it off or it'll grow mold. Like I completely understand but at the same time I feel like I want to cry from frustration.

Hi @PaperCrow,
Sorry to hear you are having problems with the loud noise caused by the extractor fan, it does sound like it is annoying and it is not good if it is affecting your sleep! I know you have mentioned that you have raised the issue with reception, however does your accommodation have a maintenance team? I know my accommodation does and by putting in a simple maintenance request, they should come by your flat and try to resolve the issue. It is strange that they say you cannot turn it off, I have never heard of that before!

Try to find to find out if there is any maintenance team onsite and hopefully the issue can be sorted and you can enjoy a peaceful nights sleep! I hope this response has somewhat helped, let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks, Matt 🙂

Funny thing really I had no idea it was the extractor fan at first, we all thought it was an electrical noise or smth. So we first asked reception, they then handed us off to maintenance, they then handed us off to an external maintenance team, and then finally just today after over a month we got an electrician who shrugged and was like "yup that noise is just the extractor fan, nothing to worry about," then immediately left 😅😭

I'm a bit surprised that there's no isolation switch for an extractor fan, but perhaps that's because you're in student accommodation and they worry that it will just be left turned off all the time.

Is this an extractor fan for a bathroom/shower room? This would explain concerns about mould.

But it's clearly an issue if it's preventing you from sleeping.

If this is accommodation arranged via your university's accommodation office, then I think you need to contact them and explain how this is affecting you. They may be able to raise this with the accommodation provider on your behalf.

Another option would be to raise a formal complaint with the accommodation provider regarding the situation, rather than just talking to the people on reception. You could ask your student union, or your university's wellbeing service, for advice and support on this.

Is this causing a problem for other people in your accommodation? Are the extractor fans in other rooms/flats set up the same way -- i.e. always on with no way to switch them off? If you can get other people to raise the same issue with the accommodation provider then that would give more weight to your complaint.

The fan itself can be turned down. Some university rooms have them in the bathroom and they turn off after a few minutes when you turn off the light. And some others have them outside of the bathroom, which is obviously worse because they do not turn off.
