Hello, I'm a year 13 student who currently holds an offer from the University of Sheffield for law (European and international) and there is a compulsory year abroad. I was wondering what funding for this would be like: tuition, maintenance, etc. Also, would it be possible to find a job while studying abroad to fund my studying?

Hi there,
I also studied abroad as part of my degree, so I can definitely offer some insight!
Funding for a year abroad does vary depending on the university and destination, but most unis—including Sheffield—usually offer support. In my case, we paid reduced tuition fees for the year abroad (around £2,000 instead of the usual £9,000), and many students were eligible for the Turing Scheme, which provides financial support for students studying abroad. The amount depends on your financial background and where you're going, but most people I know received some support.
I personally wasn’t able to work during my year abroad because of the intensity of the course, but depending on your location and visa, it might be possible—and it’s definitely worth exploring. If you know the year abroad is coming up, it’s also a good idea to save in advance (e.g. over the summer).
That said, I’d really recommend reaching out to Sheffield directly—they'll be able to confirm exactly what funding and support is available for your programme.
Best of luck—studying abroad is one of the best experiences!

Hi there,
I studied abroad in the USA last year, and while my experience may be different to yours, hopefully I can help!
Like usual, I was still able to apply to SFE to receive a tuition and maintenance loan to cover costs. I paid only 15% of my usual tuition fee, and my maintenance loan went to cover the cost of a year at Chester, as I was essentially exchanging places with another student. I was not expected to pay for any tuition, accommodation, or food at my host university, as this was covered by the student I exchanged with. However, I was required to pay for any additional costs, such as specialized classes, textbooks, travel, and additional activities.
The Turing Scheme is a great way to get some extra funding for your year abroad. I'd recommend talking to the study abroad team at Sheffield to find out how this works, and to also find out if there are any extra funding options for you.
In my case, I could've worked during my time abroad, but it was a complicated and long process to approve. You might find that you simply don't have much time outside of your studies to work, as you also want to enjoy your time there. I'd definitely recommend earning as much as you can before your travels, so it's great that you have so much time to prepare!
Despite this, reaching out to the study abroad team at Sheffield will be the best place to get accurate information. They will know exactly what is available for you, and can help you get prepared for your studies.
Best of luck!
