How do you reference

It been a few years since I left education and I hoping to start uni in September 2025, with the expectation of writing lots of essays. And I know referencing is a huge part.

I have some experience with Harvard referencing when doing my English Language and Literature A Level still can't understand it to save my life.

If anyone could help would be greatly appreciated

Depending on the kind of referencing. Do you still remember Harvard referencing. I can suggest a website "cite them right," is specifically for any form of referencing. Check it out

Hi there,

I know your pain, this website has always been a huge help for my cohort: https://www.citethemrightonline.com/
You can choose Harvard style and it will guide you through every type of sources you could reference, such as journal article, book, youtube video, etc.

Please, let me know if you have any questions,

It's like, for example:

Brown, J. (2001) The Art of Cooking Snails, pp.172-185. Oxford University Press, Oxford.

or

Smith, P. (2024) 'How to kill a badger with a toothbrush' in Toothbrush Tales. Available at www.toothbrush.com (Accessed: 2 May 2025)

Harvard is a very loose term and has no one way of doing things, it's just a blanket term for a collection of variants of name-date referencing. Consequently, your University might have a 'house style' (mine did), or they might not really care as long as things are consistent (another of my institutions was like this).

All will be revealed once you get there. Your university library will be able to help.

As everyone have said, it usually depends on the uni, and they usually give you all the support you need to reference! However, there are really useful websites to help you collate references. My personal favourite is MyBib
