Should I Start Uni Next Year?

Hi, so basically at the moment i am in my last year of college, i’m doing Public Services with predicted grades of D*DD, i’m 17, i turn 18 in June, and essentially i never really wanted to go uni, however, around February/March time i changed my mind and started a late application, i applied to Lancaster, York, Exeter, Surrey and Edge Hill for Finance, but, i really wanted to go Durham however they’re Finance Course is already full and i’m not able to apply to them, i’m basically asking should i just firm going to Lancaster or York, or should i wait an extra year and see if Durham will take me in for consideration?

One key question is why you really wanted to go to Durham.

To increase my future employability, Durham is a Target/Semi-target Uni for finance jobs, whilst on the other hand Lancaster or York are at best Low Target Unis for Finance jobs.

If that's the case then reapply next year assuming that you achieve Durham's minimum requirements. You can firm and insure this year if you want, in case you don't get what Durham require.

Hi there,

You've already had some great advice which I'd second. If you are keen on Durham, then doing the very best you can with your current qualifications to meet their requirements, then taking a year out and reapplying in the main on-time cycle next year might be a good option for you.

Taking a gap year will give you the chance to think a bit more deeply about your goals and what you might want to do in future, work part time to get some experience and money, travel if you want to, or perhaps try and go for some kind of finance internship to see if you like the sector. Having a bit of mental rest and time to think about your aims and get more experience is likely to prepare you better for uni, as well as meaning you can apply for your accommodation etc sooner rather than rushing things because of a late application.

Its entirely up to you and what you think would be best for you - however you're still very young and you have plenty of time to figure everything out and get to where you want to be!

I hope some of this helps, best of luck 🙂

Will Durham accept the BTEC subject you are taking?
Many Unis specifically exclude Public or Uniformed Services as they are not seen as being 'academic enough'. And have you checked what GCSE Maths etc grade they require?

I’ve sent them an email, i’m just waiting for a response. If they don’t accept it then i’ll firm lancaster or york, however, if they consider UPS as a btec i’ll consider taking a gap year
