how to improve from a grade 6 to 7+ in maths gcse?

What is the difference between a grade 6 student and a grade 7 student in maths gcse?

I feel like for the whole of year 11 I have been consistently stuck at a grade 6. My revision commitment for maths has definitely improved over the years but I never see any improvement in practice exams I do at school. I always get a 6, 6+ or 6-.

For reference I use maths genie. I do averagely 2 past papers a week and mark them + homework from my tuition that are also mostly past questions. After I complete a test I pick out a topic to watch a GCSE maths tutor video on and I genuinely understand that topic after watching his videos.

My teacher does weekly maths tests but whenever I see a question my mind either a) completely goes blank b) don’t know how to approach the question c) I know what the question is asking but I don’t know how or what to apply what I’ve been taught to it. This week I’ve been going through the same questions in class with my friend who gets usually a grade 8, and I understand how to do it but whenever I’m in the exam I don’t know what to do when I’m stuck

Stop watching videos, start practicing. Maths Genie has another page with questions organised by topics and by difficulty(grades). The issue you have is very common and easy to solve. I got a Grade 9 in Year 10 and tutor maths now, you can't imagine how many students there are who can understand Grade 9 topics, yet stack on Grades 4-6. It's not only about understanding but also about knowing the methods of how to solve each kind of question, they are very repetitive. Again, it's very effective to do questions organised by topic. Only use past papers to identify your weak areas and track progress. It shouldn't be your main revision method! Another common mistake students make is not going through the answers properly. You need to anotate and write the full correct solution(preferably in a different colour) and figure out where exactly you went wrong and how you can prevent this same mistake from happening again.

If you have any questions feel free to ask🙂

The thing is I do topic based questions on maths genie but it’s hard to find rarer questions that require a further step or are application based. That’s the thing I struggle with the most

If you can, purchase the 8-9 targeted exam practice workbooks from CGP, they help a lot. Also, and this may sound obvious, have a look at worked solutions instead of mark schemes as they are much more useful, or they are for my board anyway.

I'd recommend doing as many past papers as you can, finding weak topics then using places like math genie to practice those topics.

I literally do but I don’t know how to incorporate the worked answers into my own work

Are you using the resources on Dr Frost or MathsMadeEasy?

Also when you've done a past paper ask your teacher for the shadow paper [on the teacher Emporium website] which is similar to that past paper. It is a good way of seeing if you have learnt from that paper.

im in y10 so maybe dont trust me too much but i somehow stumbled my way into top set so here's my advice: (before you read this please note i go to maths tuition so each week we'd have a test which is why i started doing this) each week go over a maths topic or two that you usually get mistakes on that you noticed throughout your tests. on maths genie, once you've done like the 1st page for example, check your answers, and if you didn't get them right and don't understand why, use the model answers. if you don't fully understand the model answers, watch the video. the 1st page is the simplest, and if you don't have too much time, skip to the middle of the pdf and repeat, then do the end and repeat. it sounds super complicated but i promise it takes max 30 mins and i got 68% in y8 to 90% in y9
