Depression at a-levels

So I’ve had depression for a few years but recently it’s gotten so bad that I can’t get out of bed, eat, study, think. I really want to go to uni (I have offers from all Russel Groups) but I know I won’t be able to meet my offers when I can’t study and my a levels are in a month. Does anyone have any ideas of what to do? I don’t really want to take a whole year out

Hi @Izzystorer

Sorry to hear you’re feeling like this. It’s important to tell your school how you are feeling as they may be able to offer support or special considerations. For studying, focus on key topics and use past papers, mark schemes, and active recall to make revision more manageable. Even short revision sessions can help. You’re not alone in this, and there are always options. Take things one step at a time, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Hope that helps

Lets face it - in terms of stress levels, leaving home, moving miles away, living in an entirely new city and starting a new part of your life is never going to be entirely 'easy' is it - add in any MH condition and that just increases any sense of unknown. Subsequently dropping out and feeling that you have 'failed' is upsetting, and damaging to your confidence, and would then have an ongoing impact on your depression etc.

Take a year out. Get your head in the best possible place you can. Get a job (any job) and have some fun. Nowhere does it say that you can only go to Uni straight from school. And before any of that, talk to your Head of Sixth or similar about how you are feeling. They will have seen other people feeling exactly the same at this stage in Y13 - and they will know how to help you.

have you been to your gp about this? you can also talk to your tutor or try to get through this last hurdle - but i don't want to minimise what you're feeling because personally i know how difficult it is because i faced a similar scenario when i was in sixth form. nothing wrong with taking a whole year out, but will change things (i also did that)
