Year 12 wondering about computer science courses

I'm considering applying to do computer science (or possibly computer science and philosophy) and I was wondering which unis I should go for. I've got it down to a shortlist of Oxford (doing compsci and phil), Sheffield, Durham, Manchester, Birmingham, Warwick, Southampton, and Nottingham. They're all in similar places on league tables and have similar entry requirements, so I wanted to know if any have a particular advantage. Thanks!

I would look into course content now. CS is broad - which unis have modules that interest you? Start thinking of other things - the city itself, the facilities offered (both generally and for CS) and accomodation are all things you could look into.

Hiya,

I am currently a 3rd Year Computer Science and AI student at the University of Sheffield on an integrated masters and I have really enjoyed my course so far. There has a range of different modules covered that teach a wide range of skills. I have had assignments where I had to work on programming a robot to explore a maze, others include creating a mobile app that has AR capabilities. So I would have a look at modules that all the courses offer and see which are the most appealing to you!

I think the best way to make a decision is to visit the university on open days and get a feel for the city. Also, it is important to focus on extracurricular activities that are offered at the uni as many people may come out of uni with a degree, but being able to get experience whether that is through participating in student led projects or being on a committee, it is good to further your skills set.

Sheffield has great student led projects in the Engineering department, some even going to America to take part in international competitions. So I would recommend having an overall look at the university and seeing what else it offers.

Hope that helps and let me know if you have anymore questions about CS or life about Sheffield!
