NatSci/Biochemistry super curriculars and honest opinions

Hey everyone,
I’m in year 12 and looking at applying to Biochemistry/NatSci at uni. For Biochem I’m looking at Oxford, Exeter and Imperial and for NatSci I’m looking at Durham, Bath, Nottingham and Cambridge. My A levels are Biology, Chemistry, Maths and English Lit (first school-set targets 4 A* but obviously need to make sure the end of years go well) and I’ve done some extracurricular stuff like rowing and music, but I’m wondering what the best use of my time for academic super curriculars would be. Also, any opinions of the courses above would be much appreciated. Thanks for the help!

Definitely read a few books around biochem/natsci. If you're interested in genetics, Nessa Carey's books are good. For evolution, I liked Lucy Cooke's book about female animals/evolution - TSR won't let me post the title sadly! (this is less relevant for biochem maybe). Relevant work experience in a university lab might be helpful too. I volunteered with local wildlife conservation but I applied for bio natsci, not biochem. xx

Hey! Can i just ask what a levels did you do and what modules youre planning to take for first year Cambridge Nat sci? You seem to have very similar interests to me but I don’t really like the look for Cambridge Nat sci because of the limited bio options so i would be interested in what you’re planning to do 🙂

Hi, I did bio, chemistry, maths and geography a-levels. I haven't fully decided on which modules to take (and they do vary ever-so-slightly between years), but probably the evolution/biodiversity/ecology module, the cell/molecular biology module and either chemistry or earth sciences, with the biological maths option. But there are typically three biology modules to choose from if you just want to do biology. I was drawn to natsci because I wanted to do another science in addition to biology, in the first year at least. xx

Thanks so much for this! That makes a lot of sense 🙂 I want to specialise at uni so Nat sci probably isnt for me, thanks anyway!
