I don't live there but much prefer to scan my shopping myself - much quicker and no need to unload trolley at the till.

I dont live there either.
I m the same though in that i like to scan my shopping myself when in a supermarket. Its quicker and i can just scan my stuff and go. The only thing that bugs me is that a lot are card only. They dont have as many that accept cash, which does my head in a bit.
I can see why people might not like them though. Older people (or people who are lonely) probably prefer to talk to someone. And i can see why people might think they are taking jobs.
