UNI Advice

I'm looking to go to Uni next year and need some advice. I am really looking for a campus based uni that is part of the RG. Im looking to study something to do with business - business economics, business management, sports management, accounting, finance. Something that is important is good JSOC and a good nightlife. If anyone can help point me in the right direction it would be very helpful and much appreciated. I am currently studying A-levels which are Business studies, Economics and Drama though im not interested in studying drama any further. Any help would be very useful, Thanks.

Hi there!

Its great to hear you're thinking ahead about your options.

Choosing a uni and a course is a very personal decision and I would advise that its important to do your own research into different unis' course catalogues to see what's out there, visiting a few open days of places you might want to be and try and reflect on which area you would find the most interesting. Of course it also depends on what predicted grades you are aiming for.

As a starting point if you're interested in Business/Management/Econ, then a few pointers are Oxbridge, Bath, King's, Warwick and UCL (other good options may be St Andrews, Edinburgh, Exeter, Durham, Bristol) - perhaps have a look at some of the courses available at these and others you may be interested in and see if you like the look of any, and then try to go to a few open days and speak to a few current students and lecturers and see what you think.

Just a quick shout out for Bath - not only are we hyper-proud of our business school, but we also have one of the best placement schemes in the country with the huge majority of our courses offering options with a placement. Bath city also has a lot of fun stuff to see - there are coffee houses, green parks, street food, axe throwing, a few really nice pubs and nightclubs, plus its one of the safest cities in the country. Theres a lot of student accom available too and so although Bath's cost of living isn't as cheap as some cities, there are plenty of ways around it 🙂

I hope some of this helps, best of luck with everything!

Hi @SamLeigh1234 ,

It's great to hear your interested in going to university! I personally broke down the factors that made me either more or less interested in university into a list, this way I could see my options. Here are some general factors that you may find important:

1) Campus Type 🏢- City or Campus?
2) Cost of living 💵 - If affordability is important to you, I recommend comparing the prices of accommodations in the each area. You could do this by looking at the university owned accommodations and the local private accommodations.
3) Distance 🚶 - Would you prefer to be closer to home or further?
4) Modules 📖- Are there different modules taught on the course, if so which course is aligned more closely with your interests. For example, I loved that my course offered an optional module in digital marketing.
5) Open days 🗺️ - This way you can really feel the vibes of the university. Its an excellent chance to ask current students about their experience and also tutors about the courses.
6) Night life 🕺- Research a bit into the local area to see what exactly is available. If your interested in night life, you may prefer a campus which fits a bit into both the city and campus categories.

There are plenty of additional factors which are not on the list, so I recommend personalising it.

I would also love to share a bit of information on the University of Central Lancashire! Although we are more of a city campus, everything is generally gathered in one big space, rather than widely spread across the city. Additionally, the main campus is based in Preston which has an excellent nightlife with many places to explore. I see you have an interest in business and economics and as a business student myself I'd love to share a bit about the business school. My university has a highly reputable business school, ranking 1st in the North West for Business. Additionally our student enterprise hub is a unique addition to our campus if you have an entrepreneurial mind; here you can get excellent advice and guidance to starting a business, alongside the possibility of grants and a work space.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,
-Sophia (University of Central Lancashire)
