Spring 2025 Anime Preview

I'm about three episodes behind on most of the anime I'm watching, so what better time to sacrifice a whole day off to compose a list of yet more anime, due to arrive in a few weeks. Of course, I will be picking up way more than any sane person could follow at once, because I never learn... anyway, click the expand tags below to find out what spring 2025 has to offer anime-wise, and do please share your thoughts on any of them in this thread!

(These series are all due to start airing in the first few weeks of April. If you're looking for something to watch between now and then, maybe check last season's preview thread for some ideas!)

Boy, the names are getting longer and longer! is it so difficult for Japanese to create a short, but catchy name?

I think 'Witch Watch', 'mono' and 'Teogonia' are some examples that prove it's possible!

But yeah, long titles have been a feature of light novels for years, so it's usually those being adapted to anime that have the long titles. 'Kanchigai no Atelier Meister: Eiyuu Party no Moto Zatsuyougakari ga, Jitsu wa Sentou Igai ga SSS Rank Datta to Iu Yoku Aru Hanashi', 'Kanpekisugite Kawaige ga Nai to Konyaku Haki sareta Seijo wa Ringoku ni Urareru' and 'Isshun de Chiryou shiteita noni Yakutatazu to Tsuihou sareta Tensai Chiyushi, Yami Healer toshite Tanoshiku Ikiru' are all light novel adaptations. :p:

Long titles seem to be popular in Japan, I doubt it will work abroad. No good idea in order to merchandise these anime in foreign countries.
It begins! A day later than planned, but work has been busy. :ahee: I'll catch up over the weekend.

Aru Majo ga Shinu Made (Once Upon a Witch's Death)

Main character Meg Raspberry (love the name) is a young witch, just celebrating her 17th birthday. But rather than giving her a pleasant gift, her mentor instead chooses this day to inform Meg that her 18th birthday will be her last - she has inherited a curse, that in 1 year's time will cause her to age rapidly and die. Though the curse itself has no cure, their magical world does have a way of granting immortality: all Meg has to do is collect tears of true joy from 1,000 different people. In this first episode, she meets a child who has recently lost her mother, and helps her to try and find the flower her mother loved most.

Let's focus on the positives first - great setting and background art, feels like a more idyllic modern Britain rather than your typical fairy tale magical world. The protagonist also clearly likes her tea, I approve! And the bittersweet, melancholic premise is the kind of thing I like. But, there wasn't a lot of depth or originality here. If it continues in this obvious problem solving, 'sob story of the week' format, then it could get old fast unless the writing improves. Meg hasn't had much of a chance to dwell on her impending doom yet - she needs to get a move on collecting those tears, after all - maybe the show will save that for once we've gotten to know her better, so it hits us right in the feels.

@AngryJellyfish have you finished an anime so far and which ones are you currently watching?

For this season, everything I'm watching will be posted here, so it's just 'Once Upon a Witch's Death' at this early stage! I'm aiming for my usual one episode per day until I've got a full lineup I'm happy with, but work and other things mean I've already fallen behind on that. :colondollar:

From last season's thread, I have finished the following:

Momentary Lily
Sorairo Utility
Tasokare Hotel
Okinawa de Suki ni Natta Ko ga Hougen Sugite Tsurasugiru
Medalist
Ao no Exorcist: Yosuga Hen
Ishura S2
Dr. Stone: Science Future
Sakamoto Days
Kimi no Koto ga Daidaidaidaidaisuki na 100-nin no Kanojo S2

I dropped Übel Blatt, which was painfully bad. Kusuriya no Hitorigoto S2 is still airing, and the rest I've fallen behind with but still plan to finish.

More the story of not giving up on your dreams, and succeeding in a sport despite an unconventional / late start. But the ice skating scenes are certainly a big appeal too!

Never giving up stories are an essential part of sport animes, that is not a specialty. Be it Attack No.1 in the 70s or Megalobox in millenial years. The extraordinary feature is up to the characters, as a rule. That is why I am not so keen on with this genre.

Anything in particular catching your interest in this season's lineup?
Rock wa Lady no Tashinami deshite (Rock Is a Lady's Modesty)

When her mother marries a prominent businessman, Ririsa is transferred to Oshin Girls' Academy, a prestigious school where the daughters of Japan's most influential people are taught to look, act and dress in a way befitting of young ladies of high society. Though Ririsa is new to this lifestyle, she manages through hard work and blagging to earn the admiration of the other first years. But, she just can't bring herself to like the classical music they're all into. After she accidentally bumps into Otoha, another highly respected peer, Ririsa finds a guitar pick on the floor... and soon after is faced with a choice. Will she risk her newfound reputation to take back up the guitar?

Fantastic setup, with all the usual girls school anime tropes turned up to full volume, including some not so subtle GL undertones. All that, fantastically contrasted later with some heavy metal drumming and guitaring, wild grinning, swearing, and rude hand gestures (though the latter was a step too far for Japanese TV, comedically censored). The relationship between the two leads by the end of this episode was not where I expected things to lead, in a good way. Really looking forward to seeing more of them! Great animation quality on the whole; it did switch to 3DCG for the rock scenes, but it didn't stand out too much. More importantly, the music wasn't bad either!

Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de (The Dinner Table Detective)

Hosho Reiko is a wealthy heiress, but has no intention of carrying on her family business, and in fact lives a double life working as a detective - though not a particularly skilled one! Both these worlds collide after she is invited to a lavish hotel birthday party, and an assault occurs at the same hotel which needs investigating. Reiko does a quick change out of her dress and into her work clothes... but who brought her suit there to begin with? And who keeps whispering clues to her each time she and her bumbling superior go down the wrong track? Turns out it's the new butler she didn't even know she had, and he claims to have already cracked the case!

I like a good mystery series, and this ticks all the right boxes on that front: a big cast of suspects, some with clearer motives than others, and enough clues that the viewing audience can play along (I think, though we'll have to wait until next episode for the big reveal). It also delivered comedy-wise, thanks to the flamboyant and inept Inspector Kazamatsuri, who flopped from one dubious accusation to the next, seemingly happier with a false arrest than no result at all! The butler was ever-present in the background, but didn't introduce himself as a main character until right near the end - and Reiko's reaction was priceless.
