Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de (The Dinner Table Detective)

Hosho Reiko is a wealthy heiress, but has no intention of carrying on her family business, and in fact lives a double life working as a detective - though not a particularly skilled one! Both these worlds collide after she is invited to a lavish hotel birthday party, and an assault occurs at the same hotel which needs investigating. Reiko does a quick change out of her dress and into her work clothes... but who brought her suit there to begin with? And who keeps whispering clues to her each time she and her bumbling superior go down the wrong track? Turns out it's the new butler she didn't even know she had, and he claims to have already cracked the case!

I like a good mystery series, and this ticks all the right boxes on that front: a big cast of suspects, some with clearer motives than others, and enough clues that the viewing audience can play along (I think, though we'll have to wait until next episode for the big reveal). It also delivered comedy-wise, thanks to the flamboyant and inept Inspector Kazamatsuri, who flopped from one dubious accusation to the next, seemingly happier with a false arrest than no result at all! The butler was ever-present in the background, but didn't introduce himself as a main character until right near the end - and Reiko's reaction was priceless.

Hey, that is Magic Kaito on the picture! could it be that he gets a minor role in this anime or at least cameos now and then? nice.
Kowloon Generic Romance

'The Second Kowloon' is a cramped and densely populated area, similar to the real Kowloon Walled City of our world. Here however, a company named Generic Terra claims to be building technology to backup all human memories, and futuristic polyhedra owned by the company float in the air. Kujirai Reiko is a real estate agent living in the city, where space is a premium. She is in love with her work colleague, Kudou Hajime, and even gets mistaken for his girlfriend by the staff of a teahouse they visit together - but was this a simple misunderstanding? And why do her prescription glasses feel so off all of a sudden?

Don't let the title fool you, this romance is anything but generic! The unusual setting and lead duo in their 30s alone make sure of that, but there's a lot more mystery going on here. I am currently reading the original manga, but have only finished 3 volumes out of the 10+ so far; this anime will apparently adapt the full story in 13 episodes, and I can confirm they're rushing through the chapters at a breakneck pace. I think I'd have preferred a slower pace, and worry that most of the fun but less plot-relevant material will get cut as a result. Still, my concerns over the limited animation in the trailer may have been unfounded, this first ep looked gorgeous.

Anne Shirley

Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert are elderly siblings, living in 19th century Prince Edward Island, Canada. With Matthew no longer fit enough to tend their fields, they arrange to adopt an orphan boy to help them out... but when Matthew shows up late to the train station to pick up the boy, he instead finds a girl (the eponymous Anne) waiting for him! On their journey home, Anne seems to find delight and wonder in every plant, place and feature they pass; her limitless energy and imagination charms the quiet Matthew, but his strict and practical sister isn't so easily convinced, allowing her to stay the night but demanding she be returned to the orphanage the next day.

The latest adaptation of L. M. Montgomery's classic novel; I really enjoyed the 1979 anime directed by the late Takahata Isao, a tough act to follow in my opinion. But, I could certainly see this new version appealing to a more modern audience - it's certainly faster paced, covering as much story in one episode as the '79 anime did in five, and the animation was gorgeous... aside maybe from the clunky CGI horse. Nobody can animate horses anymore. Anne immediately charmed me once again, helped by great voice acting from Inoue Honoka. Looking forward to seeing her wild adventures and imagination again!

Edit: maybe can a boy-girl friendship survive/the gorilla girls go-to girl
Why don't you like the name?

Just the implication that a man and a woman can't be platonic friends. It could be read as referring only to the specific relationship between those two main characters I guess, but I don't know, I guess it just rubbed me the wrong way when I was making this preview thread.

No, that's inspector Kazamatsuri Kyouichirou, though I agree the outfit (and especially the colours) are strikingly similar to Magic Kaito's.

Witch Watch

Morihito looks like an ordinary high school boy. However, he is descended from oni, and has inherited their super strength, though he chose to seal this away to avoid hurting others. One day, his father announces out of nowhere that he's leaving the country on a long-term business trip. But the boy won't be left all alone - a witch named Niko, Morihito's childhood friend, will be moving in with the intention of making him her familiar! Nico makes her arrival shortly afterwards, crashing through the window of the house, and while shattered glass is an easy fix for a witch, Morihito learns the hard way that most spells come with a cost.

The old cliche of a boy and a girl suddenly being forced to live together while their parents disappear from the picture, but used very deliberately here - this show knows how ridiculous it is. The rapidfire gag comedy won me over in the first half, I had to stop drinking tea because I was in danger of spewing it with laughter. Fantastic comedic timing, and use of animation. Niko and her magic were hilarious, and Morihito proved a great tsukkomi to her boke, and I loved their interactions outside of the humour too. Still, he second half's jokes didn't land quite as hard or as often, so it remains to be seen how consistent it'll be.

I think that is intended. The similarity to both is too conspicuous. If there is a trailer to the anime, I will check it out.

In an alternate, more technologically advanced present, AI robots known as 'Amicus' walk and work among humans. They are bound by the Laws of Robotics, and cannot harm humans - in theory. But recently, news broke of an Amicus who malfunctioned, killed a person, and had to be forcibly shut down. Now, several others have been attacked, reportedly by the same rare model of Amicus. Scotland Yard's prime suspect is Howard, one of only three of his model, and owned by the latest victim; he has an alibi, but robot memories are easily altered. And so, it is up to Howard's human colleague Echika to prove his innocence, by diving into the mind of the victim.

This is a much 'dryer', more serious mystery series than The Dinner Table Detective, with high stakes and little humour. I'm expecting plenty of commentary on advanced AI, and at what point robots become indistinguishable from humans, very much into that stuff! Apparently this adaptation skipped the content of the first few novels to drop us part-way through the story; I haven't read them so don't know how important those volumes are, but it certainly felt like we had no real intro to the characters before they were suddenly taken in by Scotland Yard. Maybe they're jumping ahead to the good part plot-wise, but it did feel disorienting.

Late, due to a combination of work and the latest MTG set prereleasing on Arena. But I've been looking forward to this one, worth staying up for! As usual, I'll keep my thoughts brief for sequels, to minimise spoilers.

Shoushimin Series S2 (Shoshimin: How to Become Ordinary S2)

Encouraged by his new girlfriend Osanai, school newspaper reporter Urino investigates a series of minor fires (a small patch of cut grass, a bin, a discarded bike), keen to uncover whether they're the work of a single arsonist. Meanwhile, our deuteragonist Kobato has also found a new partner, and is attempting to live an ordinary life... but I can't see him lasting long before getting dragged back into solving this show's signature mundane but weirdly gripping mysteries. As ever, gorgeous animation, especially in the opening sequence, that was a work of art. The only downside remains that the cakes in this series make me very hungry, but I have no cake of my own. :frown:

Kuroshitsuji: Midori no Majo-hen (Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc)

Ciel Phantomhive's usual job is to investigate weird goings on in Britain, on behalf of Queen Victoria. But for this series, the monarch has sent him to Germany, as news is spreading about weird sudden deaths in the country, and her grandson the Kaiser won't respond to her messages. Could these deaths be the result of a new plague? Or as the locals suggest, might it be the curse of Germany's witches, long persecuted in the past, now allegedly secluding themselves deep in the forest? A decent introduction to the new arc, and Ciel's complete lack of understanding of the German language (relying on Sebastian to translate) should make things interesting!

Uma Musume: Cinderella Grey

Horse girl racing is a popular and exciting sport - at the national level. But in Hashima, Gifu prefecture, the race course is rundown, and trainer Kitahara Jo is frustrated by the lack of star quality in its athletes. Even at Kasamatsu Training Center Academy, a local school specialised in training horse girls to be runners, teachers tell their classes not to bother aiming higher than the regional Tokai Derby. One new pupil might be about to change all of that that: Oguri Cap shows up late, wearing filthy gym clothes, is oblivious to her classmate's bullying attempts, and takes the cafeteria's 'all you can eat' buffet a bit too literally. But, she is the horse girl who finally catches Jo's attention.

I've seen Oguri Cap before as a minor character in earlier Uma Musume anime, usually eating comically large amounts of food in the background, but I'm already loving her as a protagonist! A real oddball, but hard working and dedicated. This should be a great cinderella story, complete with three mean delinquents playing a similar role to the wicked stepmother and ugly sisters, trying to keep her down. Nice to see some focus on the wider Uma Musume world outside of the big name 'Twinkle Series' too, so it has a few new things going for it. Animation from CygamesPictures looked great, better IMO than Studio KAI's entries in the main series.

Vigilante: Boku no Hero Academia Illegals (My Hero Academia: Vigilantes)

In a world where 80% of the population has a unique power (or 'Quirk'), some abuse their abilities for their own personal gain, while others apply for hero licenses to stop these villains and enforce justice. And then, there are those whose powers just aren't strong or applicable enough to become professional heroes. Some still choose to do good in their own, unlicensed ways, as vigilantes. Koichi is one such person, wearing an All Might hoodie as his costume, performing minor acts of kindness such as litter picking... but one night, he attracts the attention of Knuckle Duster, whose approach to vigilantism is a lot more violent - and he unilaterally declares Koichi to be his new disciple!

Another spin-off, and another underdog story! This one is set before the main Boku no Hero Academia series, during All Might's prime. It's a cool idea to focus on the 'grey area' between heroes and villains - those who see wrongdoing and take matters into their own hands, but who aren't bound by any rules aside from their own sense of morality. Does that make them any different to the thugs they hunt down? Certainly Koichi and self-proclaimed hero/idol Pop☆Step's activities seem harmless enough, but where do you draw the line between them and someone like Knuckle Duster? Plenty to think about here, while also enjoying the brilliantly animated comic-style action.

Apocalypse Hotel

As a result of rising air pollution, Earth's surface is no longer habitable by humans. Those who could not flee into space, underground or below the sea have presumably perished, and the status of those who DID flee to these places is unknown. But for the all robot staff of the Gingarou Hotel, artificial life goes on! They are 1,440 bookings short of their monthly target of 1,440, and have been for about a century, but that won't stop them preparing luxury meals, keeping the hotel in pristine condition, and waiting patiently at the reception desk for the day the humans come back. Though due to the lack of engineers and replacement parts, more and more staff are having to be put on 'indefinite leave'...

There aren't many anime with hotel settings, though you'd be forgiven for thinking otherwise this year with Tasokare Hotel airing last season and Hotel Inhumans airing next season! It could well be the next big thing, but for now it still feels very novel, with plenty of untapped potential. And this hotel with no guests, devoid of purpose but running as if nothing has changed, is my kind of dystopia. Yachiyo, our 'acting acting manager' protagonist, clearly feels some degree of sadness at the state of affairs, despite showing very robotic behaviours in other places, enough to remind you she's not human. A nice introduction, I'm interested to see where it'll go from here.

When Satsuki starts her first day of high school, she is captivated by the photography club president taking pictures at the entrance ceremony, and quickly signs up (along with An, who is way more into Satsuki than she is into photography). Fast forward to a year later, and these two are the only ones left; Satsuki's muse has graduated, leaving her depressed, and the club is in danger of disbanding without a third member. Hoping to escape her slump, Satsuki orders a 360° action camera for club use... but when this doesn't arrive, An convinces her to pay the local seller (scammer?) a visit. There, they meet a manga artist, who is also in need of inspiration.

From the same creator who gave us Yuru Camp comes another cozy 'cute girls doing cute things' anime. It's clear from early on that this will have a similar travel / local tourism theme, but this time with a focus on different kinds of cameras and photography rather than camping gear. I enjoy seeing people (fictional or otherwise) enjoying their hobbies and interests, even things I'm not involved with personally. And looking at the rest of my watching list, full of action, drama and fast-paced gag comedy, I absolutely need something like this for a change of pace! A great debut work from new studio Soigne too, with fluid animation and detailed backgrounds.

Wind Breaker S2

Bofurin may look like a gang of delinquent thugs, however their purpose is to protect their town and its inhabitants from outside threats, and they are beloved by the locals. But when a friend of one of their members gets into trouble with a dangerous group outside of town, is it really Bofurin's job to interfere? S1 ended in a weird place, right at the beginning of a new story arc and before a big showdown, but at least that allowed S2 to start with a bang! No recap, just continued straight where it left off about a year ago (or a week ago in my case, I marathoned it ahead of this season). Likely the best animation of any first ep this spring, accompanied by an incredible soundtrack.

Ninja to Koroshiya no Futarigurashi (A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof)

Konoha is a schoolgirl, who lives a secret double life as an assassin. The killing part, she excels at; the cleanup afterwards, not so much! One afternoon, she finds a ninja named Satoko lying in an alley - ninja aren't supposed to abandon their villages, but she inadvertently got swept up in a big escape attempt, so now her clan wants her dead. While Satoko is clumsy and ill-suited to most ninja activities, the one skill she has managed to master is making things disappear by turning them into leaves. Konoha quickly realizes this skill would help her rank up as an assassin, and invites Satoko to live in her home... but so far, the rest of the deal seems very one-sided!

SHAFT used to be my favourite studio, bringing out loads of great series each year back when I first got into anime, each with their distinctive and quirky directorial style... but their recent works haven't interested me, I've hardly watched anything from them in years. As a result, this felt nostalgic, even though I'm not at all familiar with the manga it's based on. Sorry Wind Breaker, I think this is now the best-looking first ep I've seen this season. Beautifully animated, I especially enjoyed the retro style it opened with. The deadpan jokes made me laugh, especially the treatment of Satoko's fellow ninja. Keep the hitman comedies coming, for some reason it just works.
