It's a bit weird - essentially a 7 is an A, an 8 is an A* and thus a 9 is essentially a A**, but could just be perceived as a higher traditional A*.

Hi there!

I did my GCSEs in 2018 and we were the first cohort to receive grades under the new 9-1 system, I believe. Grade 7 is an A, Grade 8 is an A* and a Grade 9 is an A**. Grade 6 is a B, Grade 5 is a strong pass (a high C) and a Grade 4 is a low pass (a low C).

Hope this helps!

Kind regards, Jenifer (Kingston rep)
9 = high A*
8 = low A*
7 = A
6 = B
5 = high C
4 = low C

Grades 3, 2, and 1 are not considered passes, and they cover the old grades D, E, F, and G.
