Hi, I think there are definitely pros and cons to both, I was in a single room in my first year and I was glad to have my own space, but on the other hand two of my best friends were roommates, they didn't know each other at all before and within a couple of months they agreed to be each others maid of honour. We're now getting a house together.
I think having a roommate is brilliant if you get on well, as it makes freshers week a lot less scary and you're set up with a friend right from the start. However, I do know quite a few people that don't get on with their roommates, and it just comes down to whether you get lucky or not.
In my experience, at uni you likely won't spend that much time in your room anyway, so even if you're not best friends with your roommate it's not a disaster.
It is true that in the more central halls more of the rooms are shared. I was lucky enough to get a single room in one of the most central halls, but you are more likely to be slightly further away if you want a single room.
I couldn't say one way or the other which option is better, as it really depends on the person, but I do think that both have advantages, and it's only for a year so no matter what it will end up working out.
Hope that was helpful!
